Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and Municipal Corporation conducted demolition drive in South Delhi's Taimoor Nagar on Monday targeting illegal constructions on drain banks. Delhi High Court issued directive on April 28 holding encroachments contributed to persistent waterlogging. Over half a dozen bulldozers deployed from 9 am to remove unauthorised structures spread across more than half a kilometre, with heavy police and paramilitary deployment. DDA officials stated residents failed to vacate despite multiple notices, prompting legal intervention. Petition by 14 encroachers brought matter before High Court. Bench of Justices Prathiba Singh and Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora observed illegal construction obstructed natural flow of sewage and rainwater, aggravating waterlogging especially during May 1-2 rains. Court noted waterlogging in various Delhi parts attributable in part to Taimoor Nagar drain's inability to effectively discharge rainwater downstream due to obstructions. Court remarked small group occupying public land cannot claim rights overriding larger public welfare. Local residents expressed anguish over short notice period and absence of rehabilitation plan, with many claiming over four decades residence and nowhere else to go.
