Residents in Anna Nagar’s VOC New Colony fear renewed flooding as dumped waste blocks stormwater drains and canal banks, while drainage gaps affect Korattur and Padi.

Key facts

Residents of VOC New Colony in Anna Nagar fear a repeat of the 2023 floods, when the area was inundated. Abandoned pushcarts, broken tiles, cement bags, plywood, plastic, jute bags and household waste dumped on private land clog stormwater drains and canal banks. Residents say streets flood within an hour of rain and sewer stench can persist for weeks; some have cleaned part of the land, but dumping continues. Wetland researcher Raju K says dumping restricts canal flow, blocks links to adjoining land, causes stagnation and inundation, destroys natural catchments and reduces groundwater recharge. In Korattur and Padi, some drains are disconnected or end abruptly in low-lying areas.
