Actor Cowndamani recovers Kodambakkam property after 18-year legal battle

thehindu · · Regulatory

Veteran actor K. Cowndamani recovered a property in Kodambakkam after an 18-year dispute with construction firm Sri Abhirami Foundation over a commercial complex project.

Key facts
  1. Cowndamani recovered a property in Kodambakkam on October 8, 2024, after an 18-year legal dispute with Sri Abhirami Foundation, a construction firm. The actor and his family purchased a plot of land on Arcot Road in Kodambakkam in 1996-97 and signed an agreement with Sri Abhirami Foundation to raise a commercial complex at ₹3.58 crore. The firm did not meet the completion deadline and kept seeking additional payments. In 2004, the company abandoned construction, and the family took possession. Sri Abhirami Foundation later forcibly re-entered and took possession. Cowndamani and family filed a civil suit in Madras High Court in 2006 seeking permanent injunction and recovery of possession with damages. The High Court on March 14, 2024, dismissed an appeal filed by the firm in 2021 against a single judge's 2019 order, directing the firm to hand over possession of five grounds and 454 sq.ft of land. The Supreme Court dismissed the firm's special leave petition in May 2024. On October 8, 2024, with bailiff and police protection, the property was recovered in accordance with court directions.
Virugambakkam Canal Drain Work Due for Completion in Two Weeks

The Hindu · · Infrastructure

Chennai’s storm-water drain work at Kaliyamman Koil Street will finish within two weeks, alongside ₹30 crore canal works and a ₹12 crore bridge.

Key facts

Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran said the storm-water drain where Kaliyamman Koil Street joins the Virugambakkam canal would be completed within two weeks. He inspected canal works in Kodambakkam zone costing an estimated ₹30 crore, including retaining walls, fencing and silt and waste removal. Chennai Metro Rail Limited is building a bridge across the canal for an estimated ₹12 crore; the existing bridge is being removed, and officials were instructed to complete the new bridge before the Northeast monsoon. The 6.70-km canal, 8–25 m wide, begins at Bhuvaneshwari Nagar in Virugambakkam, passes through Chinmaya Nagar, Saligramam and M.M.D.A. Colony, and joins the Cooum.

T. Nagar faces civic infrastructure crisis from rapid commercialisation

thehindu · · Regulatory

Chennai's T. Nagar shopping hub struggles with inadequate sewers, traffic congestion, and parking despite 15-20% commercial growth and land value rises.

Key facts
  1. Nagar constituency includes Kodambakkam, Ashok Nagar, West Mambalam, Pondy Bazaar, C.I.T. Nagar portion, and Vadapalani. Within two years of pedestrianisation, commercial sales rose 15-20% and land value increased up to 20%. Residents cite severe infrastructure bottlenecks from rampant commercialisation. Rising plinth levels and unchecked encroachments increase pressure on sewer and stormwater networks of unchanged capacity, causing frequent overflows. Ambulances and fire tenders struggle to navigate narrow lanes. The newly constructed J. Anbazhagan flyover has done little to ease traffic. Multi-level Pondy Bazaar parking is often non-operational or at full capacity. Residents report uncleared garbage, poor roads, and poster proliferation. Stormwater drain construction on Arya Gowda Road felled trees but failed to prevent rainwater entry; homes suffered waterlogging in December 2023 downpour. MLA J. Karunanithi attributes parking issues to Metro Rail work and notes traffic reduction from online shopping shift. New flyover eases travel from Saidapet to T. Nagar, Kodambakkam, Nungambakkam. One-way traffic near North Usman Road-Bazulla Road signal planned. ₹3 crore annual MLACDS fund used for bus stand and community hall upgrades.
Chennai Subways Serving Over 100,000 Commuters Remain Dilapidated

Indiatimes · · Infrastructure

Nungambakkam and Duraisamy subways in Chennai remain hazardous despite serving more than 100,000 commuters daily, with repairs still pending.

Key facts

Nungambakkam and Duraisamy subways handle more than 1 lakh commuters daily and connect Nungambakkam, Kodambakkam and T Nagar with Choolaimedu, Aminjikarai and Anna Nagar. Water leaks persist even in dry weather, while eroded tar, damaged concrete, potholes and stagnant rainwater make travel risky. Greater Chennai Corporation says it will conduct a detailed study with IIT-Madras to identify the cause of the leakage. Residents say repairs have not begun; a Choolaimedu resident described the Nungambakkam subway as slippery and hazardous, particularly for motorcyclists.
