T. Nagar Residents Report Months of Sewage Flooding on Venkataraman Street

Sewage from an apartment building has flooded Venkataraman Street for months, prompting safety and health concerns among residents and a proposed drainage solution.

Key facts

Residents of Venkataraman Street in T. Nagar said an apartment building has pumped overflowing sewage onto the road for several months. The problem eases intermittently in peak summer and worsens during the monsoon. Stagnant sewage, algae and mosquitoes have created a health hazard; the slippery road has caused motorcycle skids and falls, including among elderly residents. More than 300 families live on the street.

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has had little success removing the water. Its ward assistant engineer said the private apartment building is 3 feet below road level and its sewer system overflows constantly. The board temporarily drained the road with a tanker and is considering a drainage system as a permanent solution.

Hasthinapuram Substation Expected to Improve Power Supply by Year-End

A ₹34 crore 33/11 kV substation in Hasthinapuram is expected to be completed by year-end, improving electricity supply for nearby areas and about 30,000 consumers.

A ₹34 crore 33/11 kV substation will be built in Hasthinapuram, Chromepet, with construction expected to finish by the end of 2026. Work will begin soon after legal hurdles were cleared. The project was delayed despite funds being sanctioned.

Residents of Chromepet and nearby areas have faced frequent power cuts and low voltage for over 10 years. A 64-cent government plot in Hasthinapuram, previously encroached, was identified and allotted to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board in 2019.

The substation is expected to improve supply in Venkataraman Nagar, Vinobaji Nagar, Thirumalai Nagar, Jain Nagar, Krishna Nagar and Anna Nagar. Around 30,000 consumers in Rajakilpakkam, Kovilambakkam, Radhanagar and Pallavaram are expected to benefit.
