The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) began demolishing alleged encroachments near Faiz-e-Elahi Masjid at Turkman Gate around 1:30 am on January 7, earlier than the planned 8 am start. Four to five police personnel sustained minor injuries in stone-pelting; at least 17 earth-movers were present. Police said the situation was brought under control.

The drive followed a December 22, 2025, MCD notice stating structures beyond 0.195 acres were liable for demolition; that area includes the mosque. The notice said the managing committee and Delhi Waqf Board had not provided documents establishing ownership or lawful possession. A November 12, 2025, Delhi High Court order had directed the MCD and PWD to remove 38,940 square feet of encroachments at Ramlila Ground near Turkman Gate. An October 2025 joint survey recorded encroachments on land belonging partly to the MCD, PWD and L&DO.

The mosque committee challenged the MCD action, claiming the land is notified waqf property and that it pays lease rent. The High Court asked the MCD and L&DO to reply and listed the matter for April 22.

Petitioners alleged illegal parking, a hospital, hawkers and commercial stalls on public land, and commercial use of Delhi Waqf Board property, including cafes on the mosque terrace. They also sought removal of encroachments in MCD public parks. On the same day, a demolition drive near Faiz-e-Elahi Masjid in Turkman Gate, less than 3 km from Jama Masjid, led to clashes; four to five police personnel sustained minor injuries after stones were pelted.
