Delhi's Gole Market restoration delayed twenty years

Gole Market, a 1921 heritage building, remains under restoration after missing its 2010 Commonwealth Games deadline; cost revised multiple times.

Key facts

Gole Market, a Grade-II heritage circular building from 1921, was planned to be restored and converted into a museum before the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Initial administrative approval came in September 2006 with financial sanction of Rs 6.3 crore. Project awarded June 2009 at revised estimate of Rs 7.7 crore with August 2010 deadline. Building declared unsafe in 2007; traders asked to relocate. Legal proceedings lasted nearly six years; Delhi High Court ruled in NDMC's favour in 2013, with assurance structure would become a museum. Traders vacated by 2016. Fresh conservation estimate pushed cost to Rs 18.1 crore. Under Smart Cities Mission, consultants prepared proposal for museum on NDMC's history, which remained on paper. Subway under construction to connect market to Bhai Vir Singh Marg.
