Residents of north Chennai have urged the Water Resources Department to expedite improvements to the initial 750-metre stretch of Thanikachalam Nagar drain to reduce flooding.

Residents of north Chennai urged the Water Resources Department (WRD) to expedite improvement of the initial 750-metre stretch of Thanikachalam Nagar drain to reduce flooding in Madhavaram and Retteri areas.

They say the current channel is only 10 metres wide. Stormwater drains from Ambattur and Korattur localities link to this channel, which flows into Kodungaiyur drain.

A major portion of the Thanikachalam drain was upgraded last year at a cost of ₹91.36 crore. The drain carries surplus water from Kolathur and Retteri lakes through United Colony, Ramalinga Colony, and Thanikachalam Nagar. It is nearly 3,050 metres long, built in 1998.

The WRD reconstructed the existing channel and built an additional channel in the 750-3,050 metre stretch, improving carrying capacity to 1,000 cubic feet per second.

T.K. Shanmugam, president of the Federation of North Chennai Residents Welfare Associations, said inadequate carrying capacity and encroachments have caused flooding in Madhavaram and Kolathur wards during heavy rainfall. The federation urged building a cut and cover channel with 6-metre width.

A detailed project report for widening the initial 750-metre stretch awaits government approval. WRD will coordinate with the Revenue Department to demarcate boundaries and remove encroachments.
