HMWSSB workers fixed a sewage leak at Vinayak Nagar Colony, Shaikpet, on Sunday after Telangana Today published a report on September 19 about residents installing a 10-foot Ganesh idol next to overflowing sewage during Ganesh Chaturthi. Drain water had inundated streets and caused persistent stench. Maryala Ajay Kumar, UFERWAS member and joint secretary of Vinayak Nagar Colony Welfare Association, said two workers traced the leak to a manhole and fixed it. Kumar alleged that although Rs 23 lakh had been sanctioned for HMWSSB work, officials had not started the project. Earlier complaints from residents had failed to resolve the issue.

A rainwater drainpipe detached from the Shaikpet flyover and fell onto the Shaikpet-Raidurgam Road at midnight on Monday, August 10. A commuter on the road narrowly escaped injury. Video posted to social media showed the broken pipe on the road and other pipes still attached to the flyover that observers claimed were also at risk of falling.

A survey across Srinagar Colony, Yousufguda, Shaikpet, Tolichowki, Mehdipatnam, Attapur, Hydershakote, Sun City and Bandlaguda Jagir found footpaths used for shops, stalls, workshops and parking; where footpaths were absent, people walked on roads. Three months after the Supreme Court declared walking on safe, demarcated footpaths a fundamental right, pedestrians faced traffic risks, especially near Hidayah Islamic International School in Tolichowki and on the Hydershakote–Sun City corridor.

Footpaths in Srinagar Colony, Kamalapuri Colony and Karmikanagar are occupied by businesses or parked two-wheelers. Vendors and businesses also use pavements along Tolichowki’s 7 Tombs Road, the Mehdipatnam–Gudimalkapur Road and in Attapur. One Attapur footpath outside a house held five vehicles; a tiffin centre had operated on a pavement near Deccan Elite Hotel for seven or eight years without being asked to move.

Hydershakote main road, a growing residential corridor with gated communities, schools and supermarkets, largely lacks continuous footpaths. RTC buses, other heavy traffic and a Friday vegetable market add risks for pedestrians and schoolchildren.

Residents of Vinayak Nagar Colony in Shaikpet installed a 10-foot Ganesh idol beside pooling, overflowing sewage. They said repeated complaints about sewage leaks and overflowing manholes were ignored by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) ahead of the festival. Other civic bodies carried out road and manhole repairs and tree-pruning, residents said.

Maryala Ajay Kumar, United Federation of Resident Welfare Associations (UFERWAS) member and joint secretary of the Vinayak Nagar Colony Welfare Association, said a ₹23 lakh HMWSSB budget had been sanctioned but work had not begun. Residents and UFERWAS members criticised the board’s inaction and said the conditions caused severe inconvenience.

Khajaguda corridor improvement project in Cyberabad advancing with Raidurgam Law and Order Police Station on Old Mumbai Highway directed for demolition to build proposed underpass. Adjoining Raidurgam Traffic Police Station partially affected by road widening.

Khajaguda junction carries over 300,000 vehicles daily, including nearly 100,000 during evening peak hours 4-8 p.m. Junction connects Mehdipatnam, Shaikpet, Nanakramguda and Gachibowli.

Construction status: Of 23 proposed piers, 9 foundations and 8 piers completed. Work progressing near junction at Pier 18. When reaching Pier 14 overlapping junction, authorities plan temporary closure with major traffic diversions.

Proposed diversions: Vehicles from Malkam Cheruvu diverted via Chitrapuri Colony and Lanco Hills. Traffic from Shaikpet flyover rerouted via Timber Lake Colony toward Khajaguda village road or ESCI Road.

Current conditions: Three lanes barricaded for flyover works on road median. Shaikpet-Gachibowli carriageway undergoing road widening with temporary 15-20 ft lane created using opposite carriageway. Less than three effective lanes operating with heavy traffic causing 2-3 signal cycles to cross junction.

Completion plans: Corridor will provide 150-ft-wide road including flyover and service roads between Nanakramguda and Shaikpet. Shaikpet-Gachibowli stretch expanding to 215 ft with underpass and service roads.
