Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inaugurated the 329-metre-long, 5.5-metre-wide limited-use vehicular subway at Radha Nagar, Chromepet, on January 7, 2026. Built for ₹31.62 crore in place of level crossing 27, it benefits residents of Radha Nagar, Zameen Pallavaram, Postal Nagar, Nemilichery, Nanmangalam and Medavakkam.

Planned in 2006 as a pedestrian-only facility to connect East Chromepet residents to Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road, the project’s original cost was ₹17.65 crore. In 2016, the Highways department converted it into a limited-use subway after requests from some Radha Nagar Main Road residents. Railway work beneath the tracks was completed by 2012. Separate service bridges connect the GST Road and Radha Nagar sides to Chromepet railway station, with staircases for station access. Height gauges prevent heavy vehicles from entering; LED lights are installed along both retaining walls. The gate will remain open for larger vehicles to cross.

The Radha Nagar railway subway at LC-27 in Chromepet has entered its final phase after a 16-year delay. The project, a long-standing demand of residents, is set to open to the public on January 7 by the Deputy Chief.

Conceived in 2011 to ease congestion caused by the level crossing, the project cost about ₹14.75 crore, shared equally by the state highways department and Southern Railway. The highways department completed its work, while Southern Railway took several months to finish the staircase and platform access facilities. The subway runs beneath the railway tracks, parallel to Rajendra Prasad Road in Hasthinapuram and Grand Southern Trunk Road. It had previously been scheduled to open in September.

The decade-old Radha Nagar subway near Chromepet railway station remains shut, two months after its scheduled September 2025 opening, because of delays by Southern Railways. Taken up jointly by the state highways department and the Railways in 2014, the project was built across railway tracks to ease long-standing congestion on GST Road. Land acquisition and departmental permissions also took time. Running parallel to Rajendra Prasad Road in Hasthinapuram, the subway is expected to connect several residential pockets in Chromepet. A 3-m-wide pedestrian pathway is being laid alongside it, providing direct access to the railway station and ticket counters from both sides. The crossing has been a major traffic choke point for decades, with vehicles piling up on Radha Nagar Main Road and GST Road.

The 250-metre-long, seven-metre-wide subway at level crossing LC-27 in Chromepet is nearly 90% complete and is scheduled to open in the first week of September. The crossing serves more than one lakh commuters daily. A three-metre-wide pedestrian pathway will connect both sides directly to Chromepet railway station and its ticket counters; buses can drop passengers near the platform. The subway will accommodate two-way traffic, with an additional 70-metre stretch of railway land acquired. The GST Road bus stand is being shifted five metres closer to the platform to make room for four-wheelers.

Launched in 2010, the project was stalled for nearly a decade. After a petition by MLA I Karunanidhi, a court ordered its resumption; a ₹17-crore tender was floated in 2019. The project was revived and accelerated in 2021. Officials said remaining work would be completed within two weeks. Pallavaram MLA I Karunanidhi inspected the site with Railways, state highways and Tambaram City Municipal Corporation officials.
