Poor Diversion Roads Worsen Kochi Metro Extension Commuting

Damaged, waterlogging-prone diversion roads in Kochi are worsening travel and safety as Civil Line Road is barricaded for the metro’s Kakkanad extension.

Key facts

Commuters using the NH Bypass–Puthiya Road–Vennala–Palachuvadu–Seaport Airport Road corridor to avoid traffic on barricaded Civil Line Road face potholes, broken slabs, severe undulations and waterlogging. The Kochi Corporation owns Puthiya Road; the Public Works Department (PWD) owns the rest of the corridor. The PWD has also not properly restored Alinchuvadu–Thykavu Junction Road, which was repeatedly trenched for gas pipelines and manholes.

Official sources said Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) should urgently repair damaged roads as vehicle numbers have risen. Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas told the State Legislative Assembly that KMRL and the State government should honour their 2023 assurance to redevelop diversion roads. She cited traffic snarls and accidents, impacts on commuters, residents and traders, and delays clearing bottlenecks. Water-pipeline bursts at metro worksites disrupt drinking-water supply; concrete dumped into road trenches has worsened undulations.

PWD sources said Civil Line Road, part of Seaport Airport Road south of Collectorate Junction, and all diversion roads were handed over to KMRL, which should clear bottlenecks and keep them safe and motorable.
