Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) plans a Rs 120 crore model corridor project on the Shaikpet-Masab Tank route to decongest one of the city's key arterial roads.

GHMC has planned a link road from Masab Tank near Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital to NH-65 at Khairatabad, providing direct connectivity from First Lancer Road to Chintal Basthi via Banjara Hills Road No.1. The proposed stretch will offer relief for 25–30 years and addresses traffic challenges including inadequate carriageway width, lack of pedestrian footpaths, inefficient traffic management, and limited mass transport.

GHMC has engaged consultants to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR). Timeline: feasibility study in 40 days, draft DPR in 30 days, final DPR in 20 days.

Study scope includes analysis of road formation per approved Road Development Plan, assessment of current road conditions, alignment plans with road lines, widening, utilities, trees and structures, preliminary concepts for lighting, signages, furniture and markings, stormwater and cross drainage design, pavement structures, and traffic study evaluating current and future volumes.

Survey of five Hyderabad localities found none met Indian Roads Congress guidelines requiring 1.8m clear width in residential areas and 2.5m in commercial zones.

Lakdi-ka-Pul to Banjara Hills: Footpath narrows on bridge, becomes unsafe at night. Near Rayalaseema Ruchulu and Saifabad Police Station, hotels and canteens spill onto path, public toilets sit on pavement. At AC Guards, path is broken and littered. Masab Tank pavement becomes marketplace with hawkers, single-lane squeeze. Tree pits, tree trunks and two-wheelers block near 555 Restaurant. Poles outside Aqeeq restaurants and crockery shops obstruct. Kingston Hospital uses stretch for parking, Dine Hill restaurant's ramp breaks it. Near Balaji Grand Bazaar, puncture shop tyres and paan stalls take over. Bajaj Electronics area recovers briefly, then disappears where banks use for parking. Near Banjara Lake stops halfway. Opposite lane near Virinchi Hospital too narrow for two people to pass. Back at Lakdi-ka-Pul, bus stop sits on footpath; 5-6pm commuters spill onto road. Last stretch near CID Office taken by toilet block, repair shop, swing shop, restaurants.

MLA Colony and Jubilee Hills: No sidewalks in MLA Colony; house help walks 20-25 minutes through narrow lanes. People rest or sleep on footpaths where they exist. Jubilee Hills near Road No 45 bus stand has no proper sidewalk, potholes, water, footpaths not visible. Supreme Court declared walking on footpath a fundamental right but changes little on ground.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) conducted a two-day demolition drive on Chintal Basti main road connecting Khairatabad with Masab Tank/Banjara Hills on January 21-22, 2025. The road was supposed to be 60 feet wide but had shrunk due to encroachments by shops, buildings, and residential houses on footpaths and road. Demolitions were carried out following traffic police complaints about severely impacted traffic flow. Demolished structures included kiosks, pan shops, chicken centers, flower shops, and footwear shops. Shopkeepers reported receiving no prior warning or notice. Mohammed Zakir, chicken shop owner, reported loss of Rs 1,30,000 and family displacement. Hardware plumbing store owner Asif Mohammed was fined Rs 3,000 for littering. Residents claimed ramps were necessary during monsoon flooding which caused waist-level water accumulation. One property owner stated the house was built in 1978 and had given 50 sq yds to government in 1996 for road expansion; cement road was completed only in 2017. Khairatabad Congress MLA Danam Nagender and Nampally AIMIM MLA Majid Hussain extended support to residents on the second day. Town planning officer Sunitha stated debris would be removed overnight and new road laid in the cleared area.
