PMC Backs Ambedkar Memorial Expansion On Mangalwar Peth Land

Pune Municipal Corporation proposes acquiring a two-acre MSRDC plot in Mangalwar Peth to expand Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial instead of allowing commercial development.

PMC has moved a proposal to expand the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial in Mangalwar Peth by acquiring a two-acre plot owned by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The proposal aims to preserve the land for public use and prevent commercial development.

The proposal, earlier approved by City Improvement Committee, has received Standing Committee approval and will go before the General Body. It recommends the plot's Public and Semi-Public (PSP) reservation remain unchanged and the state government approve the memorial expansion.

The land was originally reserved for public and semi-public purposes. The state government later changed the reservation to allow a commercial project by MSRDC, and construction began. Members of backward communities protested, arguing the land adjoins Ambedkar Bhavan and should be used for its expansion.

Proposed expansion includes student hostel, library, training centre, public utility projects and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Cultural Bhavan to support education and empowerment of students and backward communities.

Standing Committee recommended the state government provide ₹25 crore during the current financial year for the project. It suggested legal processes to retain the land's reservation in the development plan be completed at government level.

If state government does not release funds by October, PMC should begin the project using its own budget. The state government should decide on the proposal within 30 days.

Once approved by General Body, the proposal will go to Maharashtra government requesting the land remain reserved for public purposes and be used exclusively for the memorial expansion.
