A wall of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's under-construction underground site near D-6, Vasant Kunj, under the Masoodpur Flyover collapsed, causing a portion of the Mahipalpur–Mehrauli Road from Fortis Hospital towards Mahipalpur to cave in on Saturday. Delhi Traffic Police advised commuters travelling from Mehrauli towards Mahipalpur to use alternate route via Aruna Asaf Ali Marg from Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, to avoid the affected stretch.

Centre approved several projects worth Rs 24,000 crore to streamline traffic and reduce pollution in Delhi and adjoining areas. Projects approved during a meeting between Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari. One project: 5 km tunnel from Mahipalpur to Vasant Kunj, to be constructed by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at estimated cost of Rs 3,500 crore.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced six major road infrastructure projects for Delhi-NCR will begin between October 2026 and April 2027, aimed at easing traffic congestion.

Projects include:

• Six-lane access-controlled highway linking Ring Road-Maharani Bagh with Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, providing connectivity to Noida International Airport at Jewar; project almost complete with PM Modi expected to inaugurate soon
• Three corridors connecting Urban Extension Road II (UER II) with Delhi-Dehradun Expressway and Delhi-Katra Expressway
• Three major state highways (recently taken over by NHAI) redeveloped into six-lane signal-free express connectors, construction likely to commence December: Ashram to Badarpur, Punjabi Bagh to Tikri Border, and Vasant Kunj to Faridabad
• Two-lane secondary service roads on both sides of UER II estimated to cost ₹6,400 crore to improve access to residential areas and commercial centres

UER II (NH-344M) is 75.7-km six-lane access-controlled expressway, third Ring Road, starts Alipur, passes through Rohini, Mundka, Najafgarh, Dwarka, culminates near Mahipalpur at Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.

Gadkari announced inert material from sanitary landfill sites will be used instead of soil in all Delhi road projects.

PWD to undertake feasibility study for flyover between NH-48 (near Mahipalpur) and Bijwasan railway overbridge to decongest southwest Delhi and provide alternative connectivity to Yashobhoomi convention centre.

Najafgarh-Kapashera Road: approximately 5.5 km stretch between NH-48 and Dwarka Expressway is most congested; total road length 15-16 km; passes through Samalkha, Bharthal, Bijwasan, Sector-28, and Chhawla before reaching Najafgarh.

Existing Bijwasan flyover: four-lane, 800 metres long, located near Bijwasan railway station; traffic load increased over past 10-12 years.

Proposal includes extending existing Bijwasan flyover by approximately 1.5 km. New flyover will provide alternative route to reach Dwarka sectors, Yashobhoomi, Sector-28, Pochanpur; diverting Dwarka-bound traffic before NH-48 will reduce congestion on approximately 1.5 km of highway during peak hours.

Bijwasan railway station redevelopment: Central government project at cost of ₹728.92 crore; features eight platforms, air concourse, commercial and retail areas; integrated with Delhi Metro; will serve as major railway connectivity hub for IGI Airport and connect to under-construction Haryana Orbital Rail corridor.

The Public Works Department is planning underpasses at Andheria Mor in south Delhi and Peeragarhi Chowk in west Delhi to decongest two of the Capital's busiest intersections. PWD minister Parvesh Verma directed officials to prepare detailed project reports (DPRs) for both sites, with an agency to be hired soon. The Delhi government allocated over ₹3,800 crore for roads and flyovers in its budget.

Peeragarhi Chowk is a major intersection on the Outer Ring Road, a choke point for traffic between north Delhi, west Delhi, and Bahadurgarh in Haryana. The road is surrounded by industrial areas including Udyog Nagar, Mundka and Mangolpuri, and residential areas like Paschim Vihar. Four traffic intersections on a short corridor, mixing of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, on-street parking, banquet halls, and unhindered incoming traffic from Vikaspuri to Wazirabad add to congestion.

Andheria Mor caters to traffic heading towards IGI airport, Gurugram, and Qutub Minar complex. Road width is insufficient near Fortis hospital traffic signal, with encroachments near Masoodpur and Mahipalpur. Encroachment by shops, street vendors, and on-street parking adds to chaos. Past decongestion attempts have not been substantial.

CRRI chief scientist S Velmurugan noted underpasses help with congestion but warned that design must be scientifically decided with proper drainage to prevent inundation during rainfall, and better public transport should be planned as a long-term solution.
