The Calcutta High Court paused the Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s attempt to demolish structures at a Grade-I heritage site on wakf property on Satish Mukherjee Road, Kalighat. Residents were granted 30 days to appeal the August 19 order. Police and central forces cordoned off the area as KMC officials arrived to demolish premises 51/1A and 51/1B. Authorities alleged one structure housed a Trinamool party office; locals said it was residential. Officials said demolition orders were issued on August 18 and 19, and a vacate notice was posted.

Repeated rain linked to a low-pressure system flooded Kolkata roads on Thursday, disrupting peak-hour traffic. A second spell lasted about 30 minutes. Waterlogging affected Chittaranjan Avenue (Shyambazar–Dharmatala), MG Road, BT Road, Kashipur Road, Thantania, Ballygunge Place, Park Circus Connector, Topsia More, Ruby More–Anandapur, Ekbalpore, Justice Dwarkanath Road, Dr Rajendra Prasad Road and Elgin Road in Ward 70. Amherst Street near Thantania Kalibari was also flooded; pedestrians struggled to cross roads.

Water receded in most areas, but remained accumulated where pumping-station construction was under way at Thantania and Northern Park, Bhawanipur. High tides keep Hooghly lock gates closed until the tide recedes. Permanent and temporary pumps operated in low-lying areas. Civic health officials said dengue cases were rising, warned that risk generally lasts until November, and urged residents to prevent stagnant clean water where Aedes aegypti larvae breed.

One of two pumps at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation-run Thanthania drainage station failed, raising flooding concerns across north and central Kolkata, including Amherst Street and Thanthania. KMC moved a pump from Kalighat drainage pumping station to Thanthania as a stop-gap measure; installation was underway Friday evening. Repairs can take seven days to one month, depending on the fault, and the repair company has been notified, but the duration for this pump’s repair is unknown. The station drains Sukeas Street, Bidhan Sarani, Muktaram Babu Street, Bechu Chatterjee Street, Keshab Chandra Sen Street and Amherst Street. Drainage problems on Amherst Street have worsened because part of the network is blocked during construction of a new drainage station at Hrishikesh Park, near Thanthania’s existing station.

Kolkata’s Q1 2026 residential sales rose 5% year on year to 4,043 units, against an approximately 4% decline across India’s top eight cities. New launches totalled 3,475 units. The weighted average price reached ₹5,937 per sq ft, up 3% from ₹5,748 in Q1 2025. Unsold inventory fell 7% to 19,062 units from 20,595; quarters to sell improved to 4.4 from 5.0.

Sales of homes priced below ₹1 crore made up nearly 73% of the total. The ₹1–2 crore segment grew 50% to 660 units; sales in the ₹5–10 crore segment surged 163%, while the ₹10–20 crore segment recorded 13 sales.

Central and South-Central Kolkata—including Alipore, Ballygunge, Park Street, Bhowanipore and Kalighat—averaged ₹10,000–₹18,000 per sq ft; legacy areas saw 6–12% annual appreciation. Rajarhat rates were ₹5,000–₹8,500 per sq ft; buyers entering in 2020–22 gained over 40%. NRI investment there rose 36%, and rental yields were 5–7%. Salt Lake, New Town, Rajarhat and EM Bypass form the IT and planned-development corridor, with employers including TCS, Cognizant, Infosys and Wipro.

Kolkata Police visited Abhishek Banerjee’s Harish Mukherjee Road residence on Monday, after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) issued notices to 17 properties linked to him and his family for building-plan verification and scrutiny over alleged unauthorised construction.

Two properties are in Panditya and adjoining areas, one is near New Alipore, and the remaining properties are in borough IX across Harish Mukherjee Road, Kalighat and Bhowanipore. Notices also went to properties linked to Banerjee’s parents and his company, Leaps and Bounce.

The KMC’s seven-day response deadline expired Monday. Municipal Commissioner Smita Pandey said Banerjee requested 10 days to submit detailed building-plan drawings to executive engineers in the KMC buildings department.

Banerjee declared income of ₹82.58 lakh for 2022–23 and ₹71.52 lakh for 2018–19 in election affidavits. He declared no personally owned motor vehicles, noting that he uses vehicles registered to his party or family.
