Santragachhi Jheel Sewage Plant and Drain Target August Completion

The West Bengal government told the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that the ₹28.8-crore Santragachhi Jheel pollution-abatement project, implemented by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), is expected to be completed by August 31. About 22% of the work was complete. The project includes a sewage treatment plant (STP), interception and diversion network, pumping station and garland drain. The work order was issued on August 12, 2024, with a two-year completion period; site cleaning and surveys began August 23, 2024, and South Eastern Railway (SER) provided STP-site access on November 25, 2024. By January 2, 2026, 350 metres of the planned 2,046-metre gravity pipeline and 13 manholes had been completed. STP construction, road restoration and gully-pit work are underway. SER permission delays are holding up sections of the northern garland drain. The NGT directed stakeholders to complete the works on time and sustain pollution-prevention measures.
