• Monsoon rain has left Kolkata roads with potholes, cracked asphalt and hazardous craters, causing traffic snarls and accident risks.
• Affected routes include EM Bypass, Park Circus Connector and DH Road. Commuters report delays between Kasba and Science City; two-wheelers are avoiding the service road near PC Gardens.
• Lalbazar sent the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) a list of roads needing repairs. An SOS was issued for DH Road between Pathakpara and Ekbalpore, Bardhaman Road in Alipore, Strand Road near Howrah Bridge and the Panchannagram stretch of EM Bypass.
• Repairs have stalled because of incessant rain. Gariahat flyover, Mominpore and Ranikuthi also have damaged stretches.

More than 10 petitions affecting over 150 people in Topsia and Kasba were filed before the Calcutta High Court’s vacation bench over demolition notices issued by Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). The cases are scheduled for Friday. On Tuesday, Justice Partha Sarathi Sen granted leave to file the petitions; Justice Shampa Dutt (Paul) will hear them. Firdous Shamim mentioned five petitions concerning premises in Topsia and Kasba, while Md Zafaryab Jilani mentioned eight to nine. Some petitions concern a Topsia apartment with 13 blocks and about 20–30 flats per block. Petitioners allege a notice under Section 400(1) was pasted on a wall rather than served individually to flat owners. A recent buyer of a flat on G J Khan Road said a Section 400(1) notice was issued in two other people’s names; he had not yet mutated ownership and sought notice in his own name and an opportunity to be heard.

• West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered disconnection of power and water supply to all illegal buildings in Kasba, Tiljala, Iqbalpur and Mominpur, Kolkata.
• He also directed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to demolish a five-storey illegal building in Tiljala after a fire in a leather goods factory killed two people.
• The fire injured three people; the building had no sanctioned plan and no basic fire-safety or power-connection norms were followed.
• Owners Sheikh Nasir and Shamim Muhammad were arrested.
• CESC has been told to identify unsanctioned buildings and factories in these areas and snap power connections.
• KMC has been ordered to cut off water supply and carry out an immediate audit of such buildings and factories.
• Bulldozers and earth movers were deployed to demolish the building on Kustia Road; central paramilitary forces and city police stood guard.
• KMC officials found the Tiljala structure was connected to an adjacent building, standing only a few inches away in violation of laws, and began demolishing the adjacent structure too.
• KMC commissioner Smita Pandey said the city would not allow unauthorised construction and would take stern action.
• The areas named are Kasba, Tiljala, Iqbalpur and Mominpur in Kolkata.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has started scraping off the top layer of narrow roads before repairing them. Repeated bitumen laying without removing older layers has left large parts of the city below road level. A portion of BB Chatterjee Road in Kasba was shown after its surface was scraped.
