Thousands of truckloads of debris and illegal parking of heavy vehicles plague the Mula-Mutha riverbed near Sangamwadi despite PMC's riverfront improvement project.

The green belt along Mula-Mutha river near Sangamwadi is turning into an unauthorised parking zone with thousands of truckloads of debris and bricks dumped in the riverbed. The stretch between Sangam Bridge and Bund Garden is under the Riverfront Improvement Project by Pune Municipal Corporation. Citizens claim private individuals are encroaching on the riverbed for parking heavy vehicles including private buses. Environmental activist Sarang Yadavkar noted clear riverbed protection guidelines were issued by Water Resources Department in May 2018. National Green Tribunal ordered removal of riverbed obstructions in October 2019 with ₹1 crore penalty warning for non-compliance. Citizens demand immediate intervention to restore river ecosystem. PMRDA Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said he would personally inspect the site and coordinate with Water Resources Department to register cases against those responsible.

  • The ₹4,727-crore Mula-Mutha river beautification project covers 44 km and is divided into 11 phases, with three pilot phases underway. PMC bears ₹700 crore per phase; remaining work is through public-private partnerships (PPP).
  • Phase 9, a 3.7-km stretch from Sangamwadi to Bund Garden, is nearing completion. Phases 10 and 11 cover 5.3 km from Bund Garden to Mundhwa and are progressing under PPP. PMC plans walking and cycling tracks and designated parking.
  • The ₹363.4-crore Shivne-Kharadi riverbed road has been delayed by land acquisition hurdles despite more than ₹300 crore spent on piecemeal work. The new road is expected to ease traffic and improve riverfront access.
