The Public Works Department (PWD) has drawn up a Rs 387-crore plan to completely redesign the drainage network along the 22-kilometre Mehrauli-Badarpur Road. The project proposal will be presented before the Expenditure and Finance Committee (E&FC) for final approval. Similar work is being undertaken at Karala-Kanjhawala Road and Zakhira underpass.

The initiative is part of Delhi's new drainage master plan, a Rs 57,000-crore programme announced last month marking the first major upgrade of the capital's drainage network in five decades. It outlines a five-phase, five-year implementation plan and a 30-year roadmap to modernise stormwater systems and curb waterlogging during severe monsoons.

The identified stretches—Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Zakhira underpass, and Karala-Kanjhawala Road—are among the most waterlogging-prone spots in the city. The Zakhira underpass features among the top ten waterlogging hotspots. Investigations revealed water accumulation there is worsened by nearby railway tracks, necessitating structural redesign.

The PWD is simultaneously remodelling the drainage system along Rohtak Road, covering an 18-km stretch. Of this, 11 km has been completed, with the remaining portion expected finished by March 2026.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced six major road infrastructure projects for Delhi-NCR will begin between October 2026 and April 2027, aimed at easing traffic congestion.

Projects include:

• Six-lane access-controlled highway linking Ring Road-Maharani Bagh with Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, providing connectivity to Noida International Airport at Jewar; project almost complete with PM Modi expected to inaugurate soon
• Three corridors connecting Urban Extension Road II (UER II) with Delhi-Dehradun Expressway and Delhi-Katra Expressway
• Three major state highways (recently taken over by NHAI) redeveloped into six-lane signal-free express connectors, construction likely to commence December: Ashram to Badarpur, Punjabi Bagh to Tikri Border, and Vasant Kunj to Faridabad
• Two-lane secondary service roads on both sides of UER II estimated to cost ₹6,400 crore to improve access to residential areas and commercial centres

UER II (NH-344M) is 75.7-km six-lane access-controlled expressway, third Ring Road, starts Alipur, passes through Rohini, Mundka, Najafgarh, Dwarka, culminates near Mahipalpur at Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.

Gadkari announced inert material from sanitary landfill sites will be used instead of soil in all Delhi road projects.

NHAI plans a 4.35km drainage system along the Badarpur Elevated Highway, costing ₹24.48 crore. The system will cross sections of the highway in Delhi and Haryana and use precast drains two metres deep and two metres wide. Tendering is likely to finish by early November, and the project is expected to take six months. Construction is expected to be inaugurated on September 27 by Union minister of state for road transport and highways Harsh Malhotra; the project was cleared after South Delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri met Union minister Nitin Gadkari on September 9.

The drain is intended to reduce monsoon waterlogging on Mathura Road, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Badarpur village and surrounding areas, where flooding can reach 3–4 feet. Existing drains are overwhelmed by runoff from Tajpur Pahadi, Molarband Extension, Badarpur Extension, Badarpur village and Mohan Baba Nagar; they have not been desilted in over a decade. The new drain is designed for a 30–40-year lifecycle.

A foot overbridge at Molarband Extension, connecting Delhi to Faridabad Sector 37, is due to be inaugurated on September 28 to improve pedestrian safety.
