The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to biomine nearly 80,000 cubic metres, or about 72,083 tonnes, of legacy waste at Athipet dumpyard in Ambattur (Zone VII), at an estimated cost of ₹7.1 crore. Approved under Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, the work is expected to take one year and will be carried out by Zigma Global Environ Solutions Private Limited, a concessionaire at the Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dumpyards.

The dumpyard, in an industrial area off Chennai–Tiruvallur High Road, was established more than three decades ago. Waste accumulated over nearly 40 years and is buried up to 2.5 metres deep. The site had been unattended for nearly four years. Biomining began in October 2019 and cleared 107,811 cubic metres by July 2023, but faced delays due to site conditions. Fresh waste was redirected there in late 2022 and early 2023 because of disposal constraints at Kodungaiyur. In 2024, Standing Committee (Public Health) chairperson G. Shanthakumari alleged illegal dumping continued despite closure; she said garden waste was brought during Cyclone Michaung in 2023 on GCC’s directions, while private operators allegedly brought household and other waste.

NHAI has issued a work order for new Chennai bypass access at Tiruneermalai, connecting the corridor with the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ), the airport and southern Chennai. A further entry and exit at Kallikuppam, near Menambedu, is planned to connect Ambattur with areas north of the Chennai-Tiruvallur railway line and ease travel for residents along Ambattur-Puzhal Road. The service road currently ends at Kallikuppam due to a railway track.

The Vanagaram toll plaza will move to Tiruneermalai. Surapattu’s plaza will be replaced by staggered, barrier-free Multi Lane Free Flow tolling at Athipattu, near Decathlon, and Menambedu. FASTag detection, cameras and automatic number plate recognition will support electronic collection; e-notices will be issued when collection fails.

Earlier NHAI plans include a six-lane vehicular underpass at Vanagaram Junction and a new Cooum causeway between Ambattur and Maduravoyal. Indicative annual collections, based on 2025-26 figures, are ₹111.49 crore at Tiruneermalai and ₹90.35 crore at Athipattu-Menambedu. NHAI is introducing MLFF at 16 toll plazas nationally; three are in Tamil Nadu: Nemili and Chennasamudram on NH-48 and Paranur on NH-45. Trial runs are under way there.

The Ambattur-Vanagaram Road, connecting Poonamallee High Road and Chennai-Tiruvallur High Road, serves thousands of daily commuters, heavy vehicles, and residents of Ambattur, Avadi, Ayyanapakkam, Ayanambakkam and Vanagaram. Road condition has deteriorated over six months with potholes, damaged manholes, and uneven surfaces creating hazards for motorists, pedestrians, schoolchildren, and disabled persons. Issues include loose gravel near Casagrand Connect causing skidding risks, dust from heavy vehicles, traffic congestion during peak hours, and increased danger after dark. State Highways department attributes delays to Torrent Gas laying pipelines along the entire stretch; pipeline work will take more than six months. Temporary repairs have been carried out but many patches have already worn away. Residents demand installation of RCC boundary columns to protect road right of way and legal action to remove encroachments and restore original carriage width.

MTC Route 104 runs between Tambaram Sanatorium and Redhills using the Chennai Bypass, connecting southern Chennai with northern suburbs. Key hubs include Tambaram Railway Station, Porur Toll Plaza, Ambattur Industrial Estate, Puzhal and Redhills. Listed stops include Kallikuppam Tea Kadai and Sri Nallaghu Polytechnic College.

The route faces congestion around Ambattur Industrial Estate and Ambattur OT during peak periods of 8:00–10:00 AM and 6:00–9:00 PM. Passengers heading to Maduravoyal or Poonamallee High Road can alight at Athipet Junction. Route 104 does not serve Kilambakkam Bus Terminus (KCBT); passengers can transfer at Tambaram Railway Station to a southbound bus. It bypasses Maduravoyal Flyover ramps; Athipet Junction is suggested for nearby destinations. The Chennai One app offers live bus tracking and digital tickets.
