Foundation laid for Thiruvanmiyur-Uthandi elevated corridor

Tamil Nadu has begun the 13 km Thiruvanmiyur-Uthandi elevated corridor on ECR, costing Rs 2,100 crore and expected to cut travel time to 10 minutes.

  • Tamil Nadu State Highways Authority (Tansha), formed in 2024 to implement PPP road projects, will execute the project.

The street is at the sewer network’s tail end, and the problem worsens during monsoons, when floodwater mixes with sewage. Residents cite health concerns, including mosquito-related illness among children; some avoid new sewer connections, and one resident has piled sand at her doorstep to keep sewage out. Chennai Metrowater clears stagnant sewage after complaints, but residents say this offers only temporary relief. They have also sought desilting of the ward’s Akkarai pond to improve groundwater recharge. Ward 197 councillor Menaga Shankar said she had made several representations and raised the issue at Greater Chennai Corporation zonal and council meetings. Estimates are being prepared to restore the pond and create a walkway. Metrowater said it is taking measures to relay the pipeline and connect it to the sewage pumping station.
