A 30-foot-wide bituminous road has been constructed along the shorelines of Periya Eri and Chitteri lakes in Unamancheri village near Vandalur in Chengalpattu district. The road was built on land officially classified as both water body and reserve forest. It provides access to a 300-acre property allegedly proposed for film city development. The road was approved by the Kancheepuram District Collectorate in 2019 and brought under the Namakku Naame public-contribution scheme starting in 2021. However, local residents claim they never contributed the mandatory 50% share required under the scheme. The original path, classified as vandi pathai (waterbody access route) and 3-5 feet wide, was allegedly widened illegally to 30 feet, with a 750-metre stretch including a bridge constructed. The road branches from Erikarai Street near a temple in Unamancheri, runs through the lake shoreline, and ends at empty land with no houses. Periya Eri spreads across 1,000 acres and Chitteri over 330 acres. Local residents noted heavy vehicles began passing through narrow village roads after a movie set was erected for 'Viduthalai 2'. Government departments including water resources, revenue, and Chengalpattu collectorate officials initially claimed ignorance, later confirming approval but unable to provide project cost, executing agency, or supporting documents. Environmental activists note lakes around Rajiv Gandhi Salai have been destroyed, contributing to severe flooding; damaging the bund reduces the lake's spread and obstructs natural water flow.

Localities around Vandalur are witnessing rapid real estate growth driven by IT sector developments and enhanced road networks. Mannivakkam is strategically located at the node of Vandalur with direct connectivity to GST Road, Outer Ring Road (ORR), Chennai Bypass Road, and Vandalur-Kelambakkam Link Road, offering access to air, rail, and road transit.

The state has completed the final 250-metre arm of the Perungalathur Road Over Bridge (ROB), towards Tambaram’s Eastern Bypass on Gandhi Road, and will open it to traffic on Friday, September 25. The 15-metre-wide, bidirectional four-lane arm is the ROB’s sixth and final arm; its completion was delayed nearly two years by a 33/11 kV substation on the alignment. State Highways paid Tangedco ₹32 crore four months ago to shift the substation and acquired the land. Motorists from Tambaram, Mappedu, Thiruvanchery and nearby areas can use the ROB towards Vandalur and Chengalpattu, bypassing GST Road; it also links to eastern Tambaram.

On Gandhi Road, nearly 1 km from the ROB, a six-lane stretch narrows to two lanes for about 750 metres through reserve forest. A proposal to provide alternative land for widening has been approved by the Chengalpattu collector. Widening to six lanes would connect motorists directly to Mappedu and Selaiyur.

The ROB replaced Level Crossing Gate 32 between Tambaram and Vandalur railway stations near Perungalathur. Construction began in 2019 at a cost of ₹235 crore. Its first two arms opened in September 2022, an arm towards New Perungalathur on SR Road in June 2023, and two arms connecting Tambaram towards Vandalur in August 2024. Activist Dayanand Krishnan said the ROB improves access to Chitlapakkam and Rajakilpakkam, but Camp Road junction remains congested at peak hours.
