• Coimbatore City Police, the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation and the Highways Department began trialling two U-turns at Uppilipalayam roundabout, also called JM Bakery junction, on September 25, 2026. The turns are between G.D. Naidu Flyover and the existing roundabout on Avinashi Road.
• Vehicles from Avinashi Old Flyover heading to Red Cross junction must pass the roundabout and take a U-turn before G.D. Naidu Flyover. Temporary barricades guide them straight. The arrangement lets them merge with traffic descending G.D. Naidu Flyover; previously, traffic from both flyovers clashed at the roundabout.
• Vehicles descending G.D. Naidu Flyover can make a U-turn towards V.O.C. Park, L.I.C. junction and Anna Silai. Vehicles from Avinashi Old Flyover can turn left onto Addis Street towards Nehru Stadium and Park Gate junction.
• Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S.S. Maheswaran said traffic flowed smoothly during the trial. The Corporation’s Road Safety Cell will observe flows for several days.

Several Avinashi Road bus shelters were removed during construction of the GD Naidu flyover, leaving passengers exposed to sun and rain. Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation plans to install additional shelters and repair damaged ones. In 2025, the state highways department paid the corporation ₹2.64 crore to install shelters at 19 locations. Of these, nine locations from Uppilipalayam to Goldwins had no shelters, while shelters at the others were in poor condition. Officials identified 32 locations in 2025: 15 on the Uppilipalayam-to-Goldwins stretch and 17 on the opposite carriageway.

The 50-year-old Uppilipalayam Flyover, also called the Old Avinashi Road Flyover, links Avinashi Road, Goods Shed Road, Mill Road and Dr Krishnaswamy Road. Its roundabout bottlenecks traffic; monsoon waterlogging beneath the flyover sends gridlocks as far as Chinthamani, Uppilipalayam Junction and the Railway Station signal. A January 2025 gas tanker accident heightened safety concerns.

In 2024, the State Highways Department proposed widening the 10.5-metre roundabout using additional pillars on vacant land, for less than ₹1 crore. NHAI declined to issue an NOC, saying it would do the work, and later proposed widening it to 14 metres at an estimated ₹30 crore, subject to Central approval of a detailed project report.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways transferred the Sathyamangalam Road (NH-948) corridor, including the roundabout, to NHAI in December 2025; it was formally handed over on July 1, 2026. Officials say inspection found land acquisition necessary, and steps to acquire land and secure funds have begun. Work could start within a month after approvals. CCMC pipeline work is also underway near the weakened roundabout.

The ₹1,791.23-crore, 10.1-km flyover from Uppilipalayam was scheduled for completion in August 2024. Of 304 decks on its four-lane main carriageway, 301 have been laid. Railways must install a 52-metre steel girder near Hope College before two concrete decks can be laid; the girder is being transported in parts after multiple tests.

The flyover has eight ramps, each six metres wide; deck work is complete on five. The main carriageway and seven ramps could be completed in July 2025, while the remaining ramp may take longer. Coimbatore Corporation will install 32 bus shelters along the six-lane surface-level service road at a cost of ₹2.64 crore.

The Highways Department is preparing a detailed project report to extend the flyover to Neelambur and coordinating with Chennai Metro Rail, which has a proposal for a metro on Avinashi Road. Road users have raised concerns about traffic congestion where the main ramps end at Uppilipalayam and Goldwins.

On November 5, 2024, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin handed 300 Coimbatore landowners copies of Housing and Urban Development Department G.O. 179 under the ‘Mudhalvarin Munnaeduppu Thittam’. The orders restore ownership of land acquired by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB), ending a 30–35-year wait and removing the need for TNHB no-objection certificates to obtain pattas or building approvals. The first phase covers 468.89 acres: Ganapathy, 29.47 acres; Vilankurichi, 64; Veerakeralam, 87.4; Telugupalayam, 23.12; Kavundampalayam, 0.54; Vadavalli, 152.38; Kumarapalayam, 53.33; Kalapatty, 56.1; and Uppilipallayam, 2.55. By August 2023, TNHB had received 5,386 public representations seeking NOCs, land re-conveyance and other remedies. About 10,000 owners across 2,002 acres in Coimbatore district have been identified for orders; the exercise is to be extended across Tamil Nadu.
