More than 1,000 families in Chennai’s Thiruvalluvar Nagar plan an August 31 road blockade over inadequate drinking water, a damaged tank and sewage stagnation.

More than 1,000 families in Thiruvalluvar Nagar, in the R.K. Nagar Assembly constituency and Tondiarpet Zone of Greater Chennai Corporation, plan a road blockade on August 31 over severe drinking water shortages, a dilapidated overhead tank and sewage stagnation.

The residents’ association of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board colony, which has over 300 houses, decided on the protest at an executive committee meeting attended by D.K. Shanmugam, president of the Federation of North Chennai Residents Welfare Associations. Shanmugam said the tank’s capacity is insufficient for even half the colony’s families, it is at risk of collapsing, and sewage overflow and stagnation have been a concern for many years.

Residents of Sithalapakkam say tanker lorries have dumped sewage on open land for nearly 10 years, causing a foul stench and making bore-well water unusable. Two water companies also discharge reject water and untreated sewage there. Residents say dumping resumes after complaints and warnings; panchayat president Ravi said he warned those responsible and claimed it happened only once unknowingly.

Part of the site belongs to the panchayat; the privately owned portion measures about 70 cents and is under litigation. A court has directed it be surveyed and measured, but sewage and water have prevented the survey. The family is considering asking the court to allow building debris to be dumped there so it can be measured.

Activist P. Viswanathan cited raw sewage entering Sembakkam lake in Pallavaram because there is no sewage treatment plant. He said Ottiyambakkam, Perumbakkam, Koilambakkam, Vengaivasal and Sithalapakkam have grown over 20 years but lack underground sewage systems; some remain under panchayat unions that lack funds for underground lines. He urged CMDA and the MAWS Department to accelerate development.
