Surya Nagar Residents Seek Probe Into Illegal High-Rise Construction

More than 5,000 residents have accused GHMC Circle 18 officials of enabling unauthorised high-rises and sought criminal action and a high-level probe.

Residents of Suryanagar Colony, Tolichowki, filed a complaint with the vigilance and enforcement department on January 25, 2025, accusing GHMC Circle 18 officials of corruption, harassment and misuse of power. They said ₹70 lakh was sanctioned for road works and tenders issued more than a year ago, but the work remains incomplete amid alleged bribe demands. Approved proposals for a sports complex and community hall are also delayed. The colony has 5,000 residents.

The complaint named executive engineer Vijay Kumar, deputy executive engineer Hariram and assistant engineer Mohan Rao. Residents alleged tender manipulation, embezzlement and intimidation, and cited quickly deteriorating roads in neighbouring Shaikpet division. They asked V&E director A.R. Srinivas to investigate officials’ finances and tenders, audit completed Circle 18 projects, suspend the officials during the inquiry, and expedite works with quality controls. Srinivas reportedly assured them of an inquiry. Adviser Asif Sohail said residents may file a PIL in the High Court. He also alleged Circle 18 town-planning officials took bribes to approve seven-floor buildings on small plots.
