Siruthuli Begins Sundapalayam Stream Restoration Project in Coimbatore

Siruthuli, backed by Indo-Tech Transformers, has begun a project to treat sewage and restore 1.5 km of the Sundapalayam stream.

Key facts

Siruthuli began the project on Wednesday, December 31, with support from Indo-Tech Transformers. It will clean and desilt 1.5 km of the stream, build three check dams to improve water retention, percolation and groundwater recharge, and treat wastewater using treatment solutions, constructed wetlands and vetiver planted along the banks. Groundwater quality is expected to improve within six months, with complete stream restoration as the goal.

Sundapalayam Periapallam originates in the Marudhamalai hills and drains into the Noyyal River. Untreated sewage from rapid urban expansion is discharged into the stream. Siruthuli is assessing sewage quality and quantity and exploring treatment options; earlier vetiver planting in phase one showed encouraging water-quality results. Farming along the banks includes coconut, areca nut and banana cultivation. Janakiraman Sarvesvaran, Consul General of India in Sydney, attended as chief guest.
