Somayampalayam Hires CCMC for Waste Management and Fences Dump Yard

The New Indian Express · · Infrastructure

Somayampalayam will pay Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation ₹9 lakh monthly for waste disposal and has built a ₹23 lakh elephant-resistant fence.

Key facts

Somayampalayam village panchayat has signed an MoU with Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) for waste management at ₹9 lakh per month. CCMC has collected around 12 tonnes of waste from the panchayat since August 2025 and has instructed it to hand over only segregated waste. Somayampalayam is the only village panchayat covered by the arrangement, following a recommendation by Coimbatore Collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar in May.

The panchayat spent ₹23 lakh on a steel-wire fence at its dump yard in the foothills of Marudhamalai to keep out wild animals, particularly elephants. Designed by a scientist from Hosur in Krishnagiri district, it uses steel-bearing construction, steel-wire ropes and steel poles, and can rise up to 12 feet. A trench was already present, but the dump yard continued to attract wildlife.

Somayampalayam Residents Oppose Coimbatore Corporation Merger

The Hindu · · Regulatory

Somayampalayam residents protested the proposed merger with Coimbatore Corporation, citing concerns over jobs, higher taxes, local decision-making and farming, and petitioned the District Collector.

Key facts

The Tamil Nadu government’s December 31, 2024, order proposes incorporating 14 local bodies into Coimbatore Corporation, citing population growth and industrial expansion. Somayampalayam village panchayat residents fear the merger would end access to the 100-day employment scheme under MGNREGS, which is available only to panchayats, and raise taxes and living costs for lower-income residents. They also oppose the shift from local panchayat decision-making to Corporation control, saying it could delay responses to community concerns, while rapid urbanisation could harm farming. Residents protested in the village on Sunday and submitted a petition to the District Collector on Monday, January 20, 2025, seeking revocation of the proposed merger.

Mylkal Flyover Delay Raises Doubts Over Coimbatore Ring Road Phases

New Indian Express · · Infrastructure

The Mylkal flyover is under 25% complete, while a government review has delayed tenders and the start of Phase II of Coimbatore’s Western Ring Road.

Key facts

Coimbatore’s 32.43-km, four-lane Western Ring Road will connect Mylkal on Salem-Cochin Road (SHU 52) to Narasimhanaickenpalayam on Nagapattinam-Gudalur-Mysore Road (NH 67), passing through 15 revenue villages. Planned in three phases, Phase I covers 11.80 km through Madukkarai, Sundakkamuthur, Perur Chettipalayam, Theethipalayam and Madampatti. Launched in August 2023, it was completed in February 2026 at an estimated cost of ₹250 crore and inaugurated by former Chief Minister MK Stalin on March 13. Its 800-metre Mylkal flyover, intended to ease congestion at the Palakkad Main Road junction, remains under 25% complete despite work starting in May 2025; only two deck slabs have been built. Underground water and drainage pipelines required relocation, while rocky terrain delayed excavation and foundations. Basement work has begun on one side, and officials aim to finish within four months. Phase II covers 12.10 km through Perur, West Chithirai Chavadi, Kallikanaicken Palayam, Vadavalli and Somayampalayam. Tenders and projects announced by the previous DMK administration are suspended for review by the TVK government; it will decide when Phase II begins.
