Coimbatore Consumer Cause petitioned the Director of Municipal Administration on June 3 over a Vadavalli property assessed under Property Tax Assessment No. 162/036/900066. It alleged the Coimbatore Corporation’s demand register showed four half-yearly property tax demands in every financial year from 2018-19 onwards, although only two should be raised annually. The additional entries allegedly inflated the demand for eight years.

The senior-citizen owner reportedly discovered the discrepancy while trying to pay dues. The organisation said repeated representations, visits to Corporation offices and online grievances had not corrected the records; online complaints were marked “resolved” without rectification or explanation. It asked the Director to direct officials to verify the records, correct the demand register and enable payment of the correct tax.

The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board is carrying out underground drainage works for the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation in Kavundampalayam, Vadavalli, Thudiyalur, Saravanampatti and Vellakinar. Roads remain damaged after excavation for pipelines and manhole chambers, particularly the Vadavalli-Thondamuthur and Vadavalli-Edayarpalayam roads. Residents and motorists report dangerous conditions, especially at night due to few streetlights, inadequate warning signs and missing barricades or reflective markers. The Corporation said it is awaiting government funds, has spoken with contractors and expects road restoration work to begin soon.

Coimbatore’s 32.43-km, four-lane Western Ring Road will connect Mylkal on Salem-Cochin Road (SHU 52) to Narasimhanaickenpalayam on Nagapattinam-Gudalur-Mysore Road (NH 67), passing through 15 revenue villages. Planned in three phases, Phase I covers 11.80 km through Madukkarai, Sundakkamuthur, Perur Chettipalayam, Theethipalayam and Madampatti. Launched in August 2023, it was completed in February 2026 at an estimated cost of ₹250 crore and inaugurated by former Chief Minister MK Stalin on March 13. Its 800-metre Mylkal flyover, intended to ease congestion at the Palakkad Main Road junction, remains under 25% complete despite work starting in May 2025; only two deck slabs have been built. Underground water and drainage pipelines required relocation, while rocky terrain delayed excavation and foundations. Basement work has begun on one side, and officials aim to finish within four months. Phase II covers 12.10 km through Perur, West Chithirai Chavadi, Kallikanaicken Palayam, Vadavalli and Somayampalayam. Tenders and projects announced by the previous DMK administration are suspended for review by the TVK government; it will decide when Phase II begins.

Coimbatore’s manufacturing base, IT expansion and infrastructure development are supporting demand for premium housing. The eight investment areas highlighted for 2026 are RS Puram, Race Course, Saibaba Colony, Peelamedu, Saravanampatti, Avinashi Road, Vadavalli and Kalapatti. Peelamedu is near the airport and IT parks; Saravanampatti is the IT corridor; Kalapatti is near the airport and IT belts. Vadavalli is known for luxury villas and plotted developments, while Avinashi Road combines commercial development with premium housing.

Premium buyers increasingly seek low-density gated communities, smart-home automation, wellness features, Vastu-compliant designs, rooftop clubhouses, rainwater harvesting and solar integration. Reported property rates are ₹9,140 per sq ft in RS Puram and around ₹8,120 per sq ft in Kalapatti. The market is supported by engineering units and MSMEs, with increasing NRI interest and a stable rental market. Marudamalai Road and Anaikatti are identified as emerging frontiers for premium development.

The Madras High Court on Jan. 30 directed the Highways Department not to fell roadside trees along the Vadavalli–Marudhamalai Road widening stretch. Justices N Sathish Kumar and T Bharatha Chakravarthy issued the order while hearing activist S Muralidharan’s petition.

Muralidharan said the project could affect 19 banyan, nine peepal, 107 palmyra and nearly 100 other native trees that provide habitat for birds, owls, small mammals and nocturnal wildlife. He urged limiting widening to Swamy Ayyappan Temple on Marudhamalai Road.

The Highways Department said land acquisition by the Revenue Department was underway after government approval to convert the two-lane road from Vadavalli to Government Law College into a four-lane road, and that work could not be abandoned after acquisition. An official said trees were being felled for development, with 10 replacement trees to be planted for each tree, and that the department planned to approach the court.
