Traders on SJP Road say water shortages, broken footpaths and roadworks have driven away workers and customers, disrupting business across more than 2,000 shops.

Traders on Bengaluru’s SJP Road, home to more than 2,000 shops, say BBMP white-topping work and broken BWSSB pipelines have disrupted business for months. Since December, traders have brought 8 to 10 cans of water from home daily. Water shortages have prompted workers to leave, while women employees say they cannot carry enough water for the day. The nearest public toilets are more than a kilometre away, near the electronics market or KR Market.

BBMP completed white-topping on a 310-metre stretch, but traders say BWSSB repeatedly starts and abandons pipeline work. The new plan is to lay pipelines beneath the footpath; the footpaths were dug up, but work has not resumed. Traders say poor roads and water shortages are keeping customers away, while they continue paying rent and salaries. BWSSB said the project falls under the Smart City initiative and referred responsibility to BBMP. A senior BBMP official said work would resume shortly.
