Chennai Metrowater is laying a pipeline from Madhavaram GNT Road to Madhavaram Red Hills Road to improve water supply in northern parts of the city. The project cost is ₹16.45 crore with 85% completion as of August 2026. The nearly 3.3-km long ductile iron pipeline (700 mm diameter) will divert water from Puzhal water treatment plant's central transmission main to Madhavaram booster station. Once complete by September, residents of three zones (Manali, Madhavaram, Tiruvottiyur) will receive additional 23 million litres of water per day. The project was devised as an alternate water source following the two-year shutdown of Minjur desalination plant. Nearly 1.75 lakh residents will benefit. Trenchless technology is being used to cross GNT Road avoiding traffic congestion. The project was announced in the 2024-25 State budget. However, residents reported that many areas of Madhavaram including Lakshmi Nagar, VGP Nagar, Mohan Nagar, Shastri Nagar, and Thirumalai Nagar still lack regular piped water supply, with damaged existing pipelines not yet restored.

Due to Chennai Metro Rail underground construction on Lattice Bridge (L.B.) Road, the stretch from Indian Oil Petrol Bunk Junction to L.B. Road-M.G. Road Junction will be completely closed to traffic from Saturday, June 27, 2026.

Traffic diversions implemented:

Buses and heavy vehicles towards Thiru.Vi.Ka Bridge: Diverted at L.B. Road-M.G. Road Junction via M.G. Road, Shastri Nagar 1st Main Road, left turn at Shastri Nagar 1st Avenue. Vehicles from Besant Nagar diverted to 7th Avenue M.G. Road, right turn to Shastri Nagar 1st Main Road.

Vehicles towards Thiruvanmiyur: Via L.B. Road-Shastri Nagar Junction, Shastri Nagar 1st Avenue, right turn to 11th Cross Street, left turn to 8th Cross Street, right turn to 10th Cross Street, M.G. Road.

Light motor vehicles towards Thiru.Vi.Ka Bridge: Diverted via Indira Nagar 2nd Avenue, 1st Main Road, 1st Avenue, L.B. Road (Indian Oil Petrol Bunk Signal Junction). Heavy vehicle movement prohibited on Indira Nagar 2nd Avenue during diversion.

Road conversions: Shastri Nagar 1st Main Road to L.B. Road via M.G. Road converted to two-way; Shastri Nagar 1st Avenue to Shastri Nagar 1st Main Road converted to two-way. Shastri Nagar 1st Main Road operates as one-way towards Thiru.Vi.Ka Bridge; 11th Cross Street as one-way towards Thiruvanmiyur.

LB Road connects Adyar to Thiruvanmiyur and beyond. Illegal parking, rash and wrong-side driving, and inadequate police presence make the road difficult to navigate during morning and evening rush hours, even for two-wheelers. Inadequate zebra crossings make it daunting for elderly pedestrians. Multiple accidents and vehicle collisions have occurred over the years; recently, three people from one apartment were injured while crossing. The 5-km stretch falls under the Thiruvanmiyur, Shastri Nagar and Adyar traffic police limits and is only 15 feet wide in several places. Two-wheelers encroach on much of its ample pavement, while cars parked on the road reduce its width near Adyar depot.

Greater Chennai Corporation has revamped the stormwater drain network in Karpagam Gardens and expanded it to handle additional rain. Residents had reported the existing drains were undersized and had collapsed in at least three places: near Shankara school, the Ramaswamy Garden Road junction and the Besant Avenue Road junction.

Precast drain blocks now cross Besant Avenue Road from its south side to the north, near a police booth. The line continues in situ towards the Adyar river, passing through Ramaswamy Garden Road and Vasatha Press Road, then turning near Malar. Final junction work at the Besant Avenue Road crossing with Karpagam Gardens First Main Road is underway; permissions reportedly delayed the work. The network also drains rainwater from Shastri Nagar. Another Shastri Nagar network connects to the Buckingham Canal near the MRTS line.
