Residents of Shahpur Jat village are protesting the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) August 31 decision to allot a 6,500-sqm land parcel to waste management contractor South Delhi MSW Solutions Pvt. Ltd. (SDMSWSPL) for parking vehicles and other activities. The site, located near the CAQM centre in Shahpur Jat Ward 172, is the area's only open space, used for celebrating festivals like Holi, Diwali and Dussehra. Residents report that Siri Fort (a protected monument), Hauz Khas and Panchsheel were developed on Shahpur Jat village land.
According to MCD's order, the area shall be kept dust-free with no tree cutting permitted per DPCC and CAQM guidelines. However, residents allege that on September 2, a contractor team arrived with a JCB and approximately 20 workers, uprooting around 10-15 trees and damaging the Siri Fort Wall. The planned site would include sheds, storage, parking spaces, e-vehicle charging infrastructure and garbage trucks.
Residents have filed complaints with the Archaeological Survey of India and Forest Department and submitted a formal request to the Shahpur Jat Village Society seeking cancellation of the August 31 order, restraint on the contractor from parking garbage vehicles, and allotment of an alternative parcel to SDMSWSPL.
