Delhi forest department granted permission to NBCC Limited under Section 9 of the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994, to transplant 1,049 trees and fell 42 trees for redevelopment of General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) colony in Sarojini Nagar. Permission issued June 19, 2026.
Affected trees reduced from initial 1,218 to 1,170 after 48 trees found outside project area. Central Empowered Committee directed saving of 79 additional trees, bringing final affected trees to 1,091.
NBCC directed to:
- Transplant 1,049 trees at Bharat Vandana Park, Dwarka
- Plant 10,910 indigenous saplings at same location
- Comply with Tree Transplantation Policy, 2020
- Submit geo-tagged photographs and annual progress reports
- No tree with active bird, squirrel or snake nests to be felled or transplanted until abandoned
- Implement soil moisture conservation measures
- If transplanted trees fail to survive, plant replacement indigenous trees with minimum 6-inch stem diameter in 1:5 ratio at own cost
Permission valid for two years, extendable one year on valid grounds. Environmental activists questioned survival rates of transplanted trees and characterised the approval as prioritising development over tree preservation.
