The new route would give Noida and Ghaziabad commuters an alternative way to reach South Delhi, diverting vehicles from the Ring Road and easing congestion near Sarai Kale Khan.

Delhi is considering a dedicated study of the Sarai Kale Khan Ring Road stretch to assess traffic interventions. The Delhi Traffic Police raised congestion at a recent high-level coordination committee meeting. The Public Works Department (PWD) has proposed a traffic simulation study covering the wider South Delhi road network, including Sarai Kale Khan; an expert agency could separately assess the stretch and the feasibility of measures.

The corridor carries commuters from ITO towards Ashram and vehicles from Noida and Ghaziabad heading towards South Delhi. Infrastructure work around Sarai Kale Khan ISBT and traffic between South, east and north Delhi add to the load.

The Master Plan of Delhi 2047 identifies the area for improved traffic management and proposes separate multi-modal transport hubs, additional skywalks, subways and pedestrian bridges. PWD built a second three-lane flyover at Sarai Kale Khan in 2023.

Agencies could build skywalks, subways and pedestrian bridges to improve pedestrian connectivity and safety, and create cultural and public spaces. The National Highways Authority of India has initiated preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) to identify long-term engineering solutions for decongesting the loop connecting the DND-Sohna section of NH-148NA at Sarai Kale Khan. Traffic from Ring Road, the Barapullah flyover and Noida converges at the interchange, where congestion is severe, particularly in the evening around 6pm. Ring Road queues routinely stretch beyond the interchange.

NCRTC has invited bids to license approximately 818 square metres (about 8,800 sq ft) across eight ground-floor locations at Sarai Kale Khan Namo Bharat station on the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor. Spaces range from 17 to 247 square metres and are offered on an “as is, where is” basis for licence periods of 9 to 15 years. Uses include food and beverage outlets, cafes, convenience stores, service centres, pod services and other retail. Bids must be submitted through e-tendering by June 17; tender details and eligibility criteria are available on NCRTC’s website and the CPP portal.

The station connects with Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, Veer Haqiqat Rai ISBT, Delhi Metro’s Pink Line and Ring Road. A 280-metre covered foot overbridge with travelators, providing direct access to Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, is operational.
