Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta met families of those who died in the May 30 Saidulajab building collapse and the June 3 Hauz Rani hotel fire, handing each family ₹10 lakh in ex-gratia assistance. Six people, including five medical students and a canteen owner, died in the collapse. The fire at a bread-and-breakfast facility in Hauz Rani, Malviya Nagar, killed 23 people, including several foreigners. Gupta said the government was taking steps to prevent such tragedies and those responsible would not be spared. Delhi Fire Services is procuring smaller firefighting vehicles to reach narrow lanes and densely populated areas.

The six-storey building at Khasra 261, Lane 5, Westend Marg, Saidulajab, collapsed onto a neighbouring canteen on Saturday, killing six and injuring nine. Delhi Police had asked MCD in March to verify whether construction followed the sanctioned plan, flagging a fifth floor; MCD confirmed the property was booked for illegal construction but punitive action was pending. Police arrested owner Karamveer Zaildar, 71, of Church Road, Vasant Kunj, on Monday evening, booking him for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, negligent conduct with respect to buildings and causing hurt.

MCD records showed 125,755 booked properties in Delhi as of May 31. In November 2025, the government restored eligibility for electricity connections to booked properties, citing public interest. Across 12 MCD zones, 76,465 illegal-construction cases were registered between 2015 and 2025; enforcement began in 35,842, 11,903 properties were sealed and 683 unsealed after rectifications. West, Central and South had the most violations; Saidulajab is in South zone.

A building collapsed at about 7.25pm on Saturday in Saidulajab, near Saket Metro station, killing six people at a canteen. Police arrested 71-year-old owner Karamveer Zaildar on Monday after a nearly 48-hour search. Two floors were allegedly being added to an existing four-storey building at Khasra No. 261, Lane No. 5, Westend Marg. Police said lease agreements for tenants operating a co-working space and media firm carried Zaildar’s name; his family also owns multiple land parcels in Saidulajab, including an adjacent coaching centre. Records examined indicate the property was registered to his father, Mangal Singh, as recently as 2020. Police said some land parcels are involved in sub judice court cases. In March, Delhi Police asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to verify whether construction of a fifth floor at the site complied with sanctioned plans.

Residents of South Delhi's Sainik Farm localities have struggled with poor connectivity for over a year due to IGNOU Road's deteriorating condition. The pothole-riddled stretch falls under Public Works Department (PWD) jurisdiction and has become increasingly congested, worsened by Delhi Metro's Golden Line construction. IGNOU Road connects Indira Gandhi National Open University to Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, serving residential areas: Neb Sarai, Freedom Fighters Enclave, Paryavaran Complex, and Saidulajaib village to Saket metro station. Bylanes feeding onto the main road have deep, frequent potholes. PWD online portal shows 81 complaints registered, 80 marked as closed. Footpaths are unusable due to encroachments, forcing pedestrians onto roads with vehicular traffic. Drains frequently overflow during monsoon and dry seasons. Golden Line construction (Aerocity to Tughlakabad) has severely hampered traffic movement. Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee permitted DMRC temporary use of 1.23 hectares of Ridge forest land for traffic diversion during Neb Sarai Metro station construction, with conditions that no trees be felled and land be restored. Ridge Management Board approved in April; Supreme Court final clearance pending. Two alternate routes planned with temporary paver blocks for vehicular movement. Environmentalists oppose forest encroachment.
