Greater Chennai Corporation is preparing a detailed project report for nature-based restoration of Sadayankuppam lake in Manali New Town, estimated to cost ₹33 crore. The area often floods during monsoons when Poondi and Puzhal reservoirs are opened. The plan includes a sedimentation pond at the northern inlet, channel improvements, desilting and dredging, a protective bund, bird island, native plants and fish, recreational facilities and measures to increase flood storage. Surplus water exits eastward, about 400 metres away, into the Kosasthalaiyar river.

The approach is also being used at Kadapakkam lake in Manali. Work began in August 2024, costs ₹58.33 crore funded by the Asian Development Bank and Global Environment Facility, and is expected to finish by February 2026. Its capacity has risen from 1.19 million cubic metres to 1.90 million cubic metres—about 70%—across 134.89 acres and a 13.4 sq km catchment. Restoration removed 7.2 lakh cubic metres of silt, strengthened 3,450 metres of bunds and connected eight waterbodies. Plans include a five-acre bird island, two biodiversity islands, a 2 km walking track and 24 native tree varieties across about 1 lakh sq ft.

Residents of Sadayankuppam in North Chennai report regular daytime burning of plastic and biomedical waste in an empty plot. They say complaints to zonal officials and the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) helpline are routinely closed without action, and no penalties have been imposed. Resident Kamalakannan said locals do not know who is responsible, but believe local authorities know about the practice and have not stopped it. Residents say the resulting fumes pollute the air and pose health concerns.

The Water Resources Department (WRD) increased Poondi reservoir discharge amid heavy rainfall and rising inflows, reporting a release of 7,000 cusecs from Monday. The article’s detailed account says surplus releases began at 2,000 cusecs at 8 pm Sunday and rose to 4,000 cusecs at 8 am Monday.

Poondi Sathyamoorthy Sagar Reservoir, in Tiruvallur and a key drinking-water source for Chennai, has a capacity of 3,231 million cubic feet (MCF) and depth of 35 feet. On Monday, its level was 33.30 feet, with 2,609 MCF stored and inflow of 5,640 cusecs from Kesavaram Dam, Ilupair Dam, Poondi Inflow Canal, Kandaleru Canal and its catchment. Water released from Ammapalli and further rain had raised the level to 33 feet.

Flooding along the Kosasthalaiyar affected more than 30 houses across five streets in low-lying Sadyankuppam. Over 40 people were temporarily moved to nearby relief camps and returned after waters receded. Officials provided food and relief assistance, and a medical camp was held.

WRD urged caution in Nambakkam, Krishnapuram, Othappai, Neyveli, Eraiyur, Bheemanthoppu, Korakkanthandalam, Somadevanpattu, Meiyur, Velliyur, Thamaraipakkam, Athur, Pandikkavanoor, Jaganathapuram, Pudukkuppam, Kannipalayam, Vannipakkam, Asuvanpalayam, Madiyur, Seemavaram, Vellivayalsavadi, Nappalayam, Edayansavadi, Manali, Manali New Town and Sadaiyanguppam, and low-lying areas along both riverbanks, including Ennore.
