At the ‘Tiruvottiyur Makkal Sangamam’ at Perundalaivar Kamarajar Mandapam, organised by the Federation of North Chennai Residents Welfare Associations and the Village Coordination Committee, residents sought:

• Raise and strengthen both banks of the Buckingham Canal by 1 metre; prevent industrial wastewater and thermal power plant ash from entering the canal and estuary; deepen and widen Ennore estuary to help Kosasthalaiyar river water reach the sea.
• Expand Metrorail to Ennore and complete the Annamalai Nagar-Wimco railway subway; provide playgrounds and gymnasiums.
• Introduce self-certification for individual houses up to 3,000 sq ft, excluding multi-storey buildings.
• Take action against industries violating pollution rules, continuously monitor air, water and soil quality, and disclose results transparently.
• Ensure regular drinking-water supply, underground sewerage connections and integrated stormwater drains.
• Issue pattas to eligible long-term residents on government and temple lands while protecting water bodies and catchment areas; provide sale deeds to people who paid for houses built by the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) plans to study two elevated corridors: Kilambakkam–Chengalpattu, spanning 26.9 km, and Assisi Nagar–Wimco Nagar, spanning 11 km. CMRL has floated bids for consultants to prepare detailed project reports (DPRs), expected to be completed in four to five months after a consultant is selected, likely within three months. Preparing the DPRs is estimated to cost nearly ₹2 crore.

The Kilambakkam extension would follow the proposed 15.46-km Chennai Airport–Kilambakkam stretch, whose DPR is under central review for approval; construction could begin after approval. The Assisi Nagar link in Madhavaram would connect Phase I and Phase II networks. Existing links between those networks include Alandur, Kilpauk, Thousand Lights, Nandanam, Koyambedu and Vadapalani.

By 2048, the Comprehensive Mobility Plan projects peak-hour, peak-direction traffic of 12,471 on Airport–Chengalpattu and 10,647 on Assisi Nagar–Wimco Nagar. Announced July 25, 2026.

Indian Railways, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) and Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) are planning to integrate suburban, regional and urban transport at Wimco Nagar in North Chennai. Proposed suburban platforms would be extended to 550 metres, allowing express and mail trains, including services to Kolkata and other eastern destinations, to stop there and easing passenger loads at Chennai Central. Plans include station waiting halls and facilities on identified metro land, a five-acre bus terminus on ITC land, a railway ticket counter on metro property, and a six-metre foot overbridge linking the metro concourse to railway platforms. Escalators, lifts, parking for two- and four-wheelers, share-auto bays and wider pedestrian paths are also proposed. A limited-use subway between Tiruvottiyur and Wimco Nagar stations is under construction by the state highways department and Southern Railway, with completion scheduled for September 2025. CUMTA and CMRL have asked Railways to consider land swaps for vehicle drop-off points. The scheme follows a ₹50 crore Indian Railways sanction in 2023-24 for integrating Chennai suburban stations with metro corridors. A similar plan is being explored at Chromepet.

VGN Group, a Chennai-based real estate developer, launched VGN Paradise, a gated community residential project at Thiruvottiyur in central Chennai, approximately 200 meters from WIMCO.

CMRL signed a contract with Jones Lang Lasalle Property Consultants India Pvt. Ltd. valued at ₹67 lakhs (excluding GST) for preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Property Development at Alandur, Alapakkam Junction, Boat Club, Nandanam, and Wimco Nagar Depot across Phase 1 and Phase 2.

Property developments will be integrated with metro stations to generate non-fare revenue:

• Alapakkam PD linked to Phase 2 station via foot over bridge (FOB)
• Nandanam PD integrated with upcoming Phase 2 underground station
• Alandur PD integrated with Phase 1 and Phase 2 metro stations
• Wimco Nagar depot will have eight floors of property development above existing metro building

Final DPR will be available within 150 days from the letter of award.
