The area often floods during monsoons when Poondi and Puzhal reservoirs are opened. The plan includes a sedimentation pond at the northern inlet, channel improvements, desilting and dredging, a protective bund, bird island, native plants and fish, recreational facilities and measures to increase flood storage. Surplus water exits eastward, about 400 metres away, into the Kosasthalaiyar river.
The approach is also being used at Kadapakkam lake in Manali. Work began in August 2024, costs ₹58.33 crore funded by the Asian Development Bank and Global Environment Facility, and is expected to finish by February 2026. Its capacity has risen from 1.19 million cubic metres to 1.90 million cubic metres—about 70%—across 134.89 acres and a 13.4 sq km catchment. Restoration removed 7.2 lakh cubic metres of silt, strengthened 3,450 metres of bunds and connected eight waterbodies. Plans include a five-acre bird island, two biodiversity islands, a 2 km walking track and 24 native tree varieties across about 1 lakh sq ft.

On Monday, its level was 33.30 feet, with 2,609 MCF stored and inflow of 5,640 cusecs from Kesavaram Dam, Ilupair Dam, Poondi Inflow Canal, Kandaleru Canal and its catchment. Water released from Ammapalli and further rain had raised the level to 33 feet.
Flooding along the Kosasthalaiyar affected more than 30 houses across five streets in low-lying Sadyankuppam. Over 40 people were temporarily moved to nearby relief camps and returned after waters receded. Officials provided food and relief assistance, and a medical camp was held.
WRD urged caution in Nambakkam, Krishnapuram, Othappai, Neyveli, Eraiyur, Bheemanthoppu, Korakkanthandalam, Somadevanpattu, Meiyur, Velliyur, Thamaraipakkam, Athur, Pandikkavanoor, Jaganathapuram, Pudukkuppam, Kannipalayam, Vannipakkam, Asuvanpalayam, Madiyur, Seemavaram, Vellivayalsavadi, Nappalayam, Edayansavadi, Manali, Manali New Town and Sadaiyanguppam, and low-lying areas along both riverbanks, including Ennore.
