The Indore administration removed the city bus stand from Rajwada Circle, making a trial measure permanent by restricting bus entry due to traffic jams caused by queued buses.

Previously, approximately 70 buses on 12 different routes stopped at Rajwada. They now halt at Nandlalpura, Nagar Nigam, and Machhli Bazaar instead.

Routes serving Rajendra Nagar, Rangwasa, Footi Kothi, Gangwal, Chandan Nagar, Airport, and Bhawarkuan previously connected through Rajwada to destinations including Dewas Naka, Vijaynagar, Khajrana, and Ring Road.

Passengers now walk approximately one kilometre between Machhli Bazaar and Nagar Nigam to access connecting buses, creating particular hardship for elderly, disabled, women, and child commuters.

Rajwada has served as a key transit hub since 2006. While traffic congestion at the circle has reduced, the administration acknowledges coordination issues and is working on solutions balancing traffic management with commuter convenience. AICTSL CEO Arth Jain stated buses are currently routed around rather than through the area.

Rajwada was declared a No-Bus Zone from Monday after a fatal accident on Sunday. Until further orders, city buses cannot operate, pass through or park in the area. E-rickshaws cannot stand or ply along the main stretch; they may use the alternative route via Cloth Market and Gora Kund. Traffic police have been deployed at key intersections to enforce the restrictions and regulate traffic.

At around 3.30 pm Sunday, the driver of an IMC electric city bus (PM Bus Sewa) hit the accelerator instead of the brake. The bus struck bystanders and an auto-rickshaw near the banyan tree, killing two people and injuring two others. Additional DCP (Traffic) Santosh Kumar Koul said the restrictions were ordered by senior officials to prevent further accidents.

Indore’s Rajwada area faces congestion from city buses, e-rickshaws, auto-rickshaws and two-wheelers sharing limited road space, compounded by event stages and arrangements. Turning movements near Laxmi Temple, Yashwant Road and MG Road create particular risks for two-wheelers, while encroached footpaths push pedestrians into traffic. Encroachments often return soon after removal drives, and traffic measures—including one-way systems, route changes and barricading—have not prevented congestion from recurring. A proposed comprehensive plan would designate bus stops and turning points, provide clear lanes or stands for e-rickshaws and autos, keep footpaths clear, assign responsibility for preventing renewed encroachments and introduce real-time traffic control at busy junctions.

A joint team from the revenue department and Indore Metro began physical verification near Rajwada on Tuesday, following Madhya Pradesh High Court directions. Petitioner Kishor Kodwani attended. The proposed underground corridor runs from the airport to Regal Tiraha. Kodwani alleges changes to the airport–Bengali Chauraha route were made without required notifications, land-acquisition procedures or public notices.

He submitted a list of 33 heritage buildings and structures, citing possible violations of heritage laws. Initial checks cover three to four sites, including Rajwada, Krishnapura Chhatris and Bolia Chhatris; revenue maps and Google Maps are being used. The proposed alignment is 205 metres from Rajwada, 188 metres from Krishnapura Chhatri, 178 metres from Bolia Sarkar Chhatri and 80 metres from Rajwada’s Durga temple.

Officials sought the Archaeology Department’s opinion and information on any prior special permission or President-notified approval. The team includes SDM Nidhi Verma, tehsildar Lokesh Ahuja and metro engineering officers. Findings and documents are due before the Collector on June 4.
