The Pune-Mumbai carriageway of the Connecting Link on the Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway will close to traffic between 12 noon and 3 pm on August 12 for maintenance and repair work plus a mock drill. Vehicles travelling from Pune towards Mumbai will be diverted through the ghat section of the old Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The Mumbai-Pune carriageway of the Connecting Link will remain open during this period.

MSRDC has initiated work on a detailed project report (DPR) to upgrade the old Pune-Mumbai Highway from four lanes to six. Project estimated to cost ₹5,000–6,000 crore, with investment to be recovered through toll revenue. Existing toll collection period, currently permitted until 2035, may be extended by 10–15 years. Widening expected to include new road links and alignment improvements, particularly through Lonavla and Khandala ghat sections. MSRDC has appointed a consultant to prepare the DPR. The old Pune-Mumbai Highway stretches approximately 150–156 km. Originally developed during British era to connect Mumbai with Deccan Plateau via Bor Ghat. Later became National Highway 4, serving as primary road link between Mumbai and Pune until Yashwantrao Chavan Pune-Mumbai Expressway opened. In 2010, redesignated as part of National Highway 48 (NH-48). Initially two lanes before being widened to four lanes. MSRDC is responsible for its maintenance and upkeep.

Heavy rainfall triggered landslides across Maharashtra, forcing closure of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and old Mumbai-Pune Highway and suspending train services. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) stated that continuous heavy rainfall and landslides severely affected traffic in both directions (Pune to Mumbai and Mumbai to Pune), stopped until further notice. The Khopoli-Kusgaon Missing Link also shut after rocks and mud fell onto the road.

A major landslide occurred near Khandala exit, close to Tunnel 2, on the Mumbai-bound carriageway of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway's Missing Link, with debris, rocks and mud covering parts of the expressway. No casualties reported from the expressway landslide.

In Patan village, Mawal taluka, Pune district, a landslide struck a house early Monday morning with three family members feared trapped. A 30-member National Disaster Response Force rescue team was deployed.

Central Railway suspended train services between Mumbai and Pune due to landslides in the ghat section. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the situation after heavy landslides and boulders fell onto railway tracks in the Mumbai-Pune Bhor Ghat section. Restoration teams prepared but heavy rainfall expected to continue.

The India Meteorological Department issued red alert for extremely heavy rainfall. Schools and colleges closed in Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Navi Mumbai. Separately, six people including four children killed after chawl partially collapsed in Mumbai's Mankhurd area on Sunday night.

The long-delayed proposal to expand the Mumbai-Pune Expressway to 10 lanes may proceed if the state government approves a revised funding plan submitted by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) last week. Officials indicated that revenue generated from existing traffic over a suitable concession period is estimated to be sufficient to cover both capital and operational costs.

Panvel exit on Mumbai-Pune Expressway closes for six months starting February 11, 2025. Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation constructing flyover and underpass at Kalamboli circle.

Impact: All vehicle types diverted; traffic from Mumbai-Pune towards Panvel, Mumbra, and JNPT via Kalamboli Circle diverted to alternate routes.

Alternate routes:

• Vehicles from Pune towards Panvel: diverted left from Kon Phata (9.6 km before Panvel exit) to Palaspe circle, then NH-48 (Delhi-Chennai highway)
• Vehicles to Taloja, Kalyan, Shilphata: descend expressway at Kalamboli, use Sion-Panvel highway, right turn under flyover near Pursharth petrol pump to Roadpali, connect to NH-48
• Traffic to Atal Setu tunnel: diverted via service road at Kon Phata without inconvenience

Mumbai-Pune Expressway: 94.5 km, 6-lane, cost Rs 1,63,000 crore, reduces Mumbai-Pune travel time from 3 hours to 1 hour. Flyover and underpass expected to reduce traffic congestion.
