Volunteers and BBMP transform Promenade Road footpaths

Volunteers, BBMP staff and Indian Army collaborated to restore broken walkways, clear weeds and beautify Promenade Road in Bangalore's cantonment zone.

Key facts

Over 60 citizen volunteers participated in a public space transformation drive on Promenade Road, the tree-lined road connecting Thom's Bakery to Halasuru Lake opposite MEG Headquarters. Around 50 volunteers from JLL Heart Warmers team and 10 BBMP staff from Pulakeshinagar took part, facilitated by The Ugly Indians in partnership with the Indian Army. Promenade Road runs parallel to St John's Church Road in the city's army cantonment zone, home to colonial-era military buildings and heritage trees. Despite being a green lung, footpaths have been neglected with broken slabs, overgrown vegetation, garbage dumping and encroachments making them unsafe for pedestrians. Work included cleaning sidewalks, repairing slabs and wall beautification. The entire footpath is expected to be fully restored in coming weeks. This is part of CleanStreets500K Challenge, a city-wide initiative to clean and revamp 500 km of city streets and footpaths in collaboration with BBMP.

Sai Layout Residents Face Decade of Repeated Flooding

Heavy rain flooded Sai Layout and other Bengaluru neighbourhoods, renewing residents’ concerns about recurring inundation, sewage contamination and falling property values.

Heavy rain on Saturday night flooded Sai Layout in K R Puram, which residents say has faced flooding for over a decade. BBMP Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao inspected affected areas on Sunday afternoon, where residents challenged him over the delayed response. One resident said floodwater reached hip level and tenants had left because of annual flooding. Owners said their property values had fallen, making it difficult to sell and relocate, despite paying property taxes.

Residents of Sai Layout, N C Colony in Pulikeshinagar and Yelachenahalli in Bangalore South spent the night clearing rainwater mixed with sewage from their homes. Floodwater entered water sumps, damaged appliances and contaminated tanks, which residents said they would have to pay to clean. N C Colony resident Bharati said there had been no desilting.
