Bengaluru Metro Pink Line Wins Railway Board Train Approval

Railway Board provisional approval clears BEML trains for Bengaluru Metro’s 7.5-km Pink Line section, with passenger services awaiting safety and government authorisations.

Key facts

Railway Board provisionally approved six-coach BEML trains for the 7.5-km Kalena Agrahara–Tavarekere elevated section. Trains may run at 80 kmph with the secondary air spring inflated and 49 kmph when deflated, under GoA2 semi-automatic operation; driverless operation requires separate approval after Unattended Train Management System capability testing and independent assessment of risks.

BMRCL submitted documents to CMRS Southern Circle commissioner V. Venkatasubramanian on Wednesday. The statutory safety inspection was expected by September-end; passenger service also requires government approvals. BMRCL plans six trains, every six minutes at peak and every 10 minutes off-peak. The signalling system has received Independent Safety Assessor certification. Jayadeva Hospital station will interchange with the operational Yellow Line.

The elevated section was previously targeted for May–June 2026, August 15 and September, after earlier overall Pink Line targets of 2020 and December 2025. The full 21.25-km line from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara will have 18 stations, including about 13.76 km underground, serving MG Road and Pottery Town; the southern section serves IIM Bangalore, JP Nagar and Hulimavu.
