Palam Fire Kills Nine After Rescue Delays at Four-Storey Building

Nine people died and three were seriously injured in a Palam Colony fire, as ladder limitations and difficult access delayed rescue efforts.

Key facts

A fire broke out around 6:30am on March 19 at a four-storey residential-commercial building in Ram Chowk Market, Sadh Nagar; the fire department was called around 7am. Firefighters arrived at about 7:15am from Dwarka Sector 6, 3.8km away. Nine people died and three were seriously injured; the cause has not been established.

Lado Kashyap, 70, and her daughter Himanshi, 22, died on the second floor. Seven of the nine people on the third floor died: Kamal, 39; Pravesh, 33; Ashu, 35; their daughters Niharika, 15, Ivani, 6, and Jaisika, 3; and Deepika, 28. Anil, 32, and his one-year-old daughter Mitali fell while being rescued and sustained fractures and head injuries.

A standard tender ladder, 42 metres long, extended to only 30 metres and reached the second floor. A Bronto aerial ladder was later sent; rescue began around 8:30am. Congested lanes, parked cars, overhead wires and toughened glass complicated operations. Delhi Fire Services said it had two functional Bronto trucks, one turntable ladder and seven articulated water towers; a third Bronto had recently stopped working. It had four Brontos in 2020–21; they expire after 10 years. A replacement has been ordered from Finland.
