Delhi Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood said on Saturday, February 7, that officials suspected of negligence were suspended after motorcyclist Kamal died falling into a pit dug for Delhi Jal Board (DJB) construction in Janakpuri. A committee was formed after Sood inspected the site on Friday morning. FIRs were registered against the DJB and contractor; police action includes arrests, and legal action is being taken against the contractor. Kamal, a Kailashpuri resident and private bank call-centre employee, was travelling home from work in Rohini on Friday. Construction on the key road connecting Vikaspuri and adjoining areas will be delayed. Traffic is being managed on a single carriageway in both directions. Delhi Police, the municipal corporation, Delhi Traffic Police, DJB and Public Works Department jointly inspected the site to expedite road restoration. The DJB issued a safety-compliance circular on January 26. Police said preliminary findings indicate the pit was part of ongoing DJB work and had been barricaded.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is set to commence passenger services on the Janakpuri West–Krishna Park extension from January 5, 2025. With the addition, the Magenta Line stretches approximately 40 kilometres.

Delhi Government approved three major flyover projects: a new flyover on Janakpuri-Pankha Road, and comprehensive repair of flyovers in Zakira and Seelampur.

Janakpuri-Pankha Road: Government approved engagement of a consultant to conduct feasibility study and prepare Detailed Project Report (DPR) for proposed flyover from DESU Colony to Janakpuri D-Block. DPR will examine traffic volume, road geometry, land availability, engineering feasibility and future mobility requirements. The stretch is one of West Delhi's busiest corridors and a key route connecting West Delhi to New Delhi and Delhi Cantonment via Cariappa Marg.

Zakira Flyover: Rs 20.18 crore sanctioned for repair and rehabilitation. Constructed in 1970s, connects Rohtak Road and Najafgarh Road in outer Delhi. Carries heavy traffic including commercial vehicles from industrial hubs (Mundka, Nangloi, Anand Parbat). Work includes repair of spalled and honeycomb concrete, replacement of expansion joints, replacement of elastomeric bearings, and strengthening of girders using CFRP laminate and carbon fibre wrapping.

Seelampur Flyover: Undergoing comprehensive repair and rehabilitation as a critical, high-load structure.

PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma stated: Janakpuri Pankha Road needs permanent, well-designed solution; DPR is first step.

Delhi plans to widen the congested, encroached four-lane Najafgarh peripheral road to six lanes, improving links with Haryana, especially Bahadurgarh and Gurugram. The road’s effective one-way width has fallen from about 30 feet to 20–25 feet at several points. UTTIPEC cleared the at-grade widening plan; a flyover was rejected because it would require acquiring hundreds of private properties. Widening is expected to meet projected traffic demand through 2038 and forms part of a plan to decongest 77 Delhi roads.

The project proposes a footpath, cycle lane and green zone, removal of encroachments, land acquisition where needed, and relocation of electricity poles, street furniture and some high-tension wires. Parking is planned at Najafgarh market, Dhansa Bus Stand, near Najafgarh police station and at key junctions: 25 spaces near Dhansa Bus Stand, 35 near the police station, 30 opposite it and 70 near the Dhansa-Bahadurgarh Road junction, plus a parking area at the Dhansa-Najafgarh junction.

Heavy commercial vehicles would be diverted from Phirni Road via improved links to Najafgarh Bypass and UER-II. The corridor serves Dwarka, Matiala, Uttam Nagar, Vikaspuri, Janakpuri and Tilak Nagar, with traffic toward Bahadurgarh, Rohtak and Gurugram. Officials also proposed exploring relocation of some bus depots.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is developing seven children’s parks using Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation funds: Janakpuri, Saket, Greater Kailash, Mayur Vihar, Swasthya Vihar, Karol Bagh and Mayapuri. Janakpuri will have an aeroplane-themed play structure; Mayur Vihar will get a 20–25-foot peacock installation with a playhouse and activities. Work is underway in Janakpuri and Mayur Vihar; the other parks are at an early stage.

The MCD’s horticulture department maintains more than 15,000 parks across nearly 5,200 acres and faces a shortage of gardeners. A revised policy, due in the coming weeks, will let resident welfare associations maintain parks with their own staff, with MCD financial support. Across all 12 zones, associations will receive ₹13,500 per acre per month, replacing earlier arrangements under the former East, North and South Delhi municipal corporations. Participating associations will also receive free compost from MCD green-waste management centres.
