Coimbatore’s underground drainage (UGD) project in parts of Ondipudur has entered its final stretch. Road restoration will follow, bringing relief to thousands of households that have been demanding the project.

Coimbatore City Police announced traffic restrictions for September 30 during Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s visit.

• Buses and heavy vehicles entering from Salem, Erode and Tiruppur cannot use Neelambur; they should take Neelambur Bypass, Chinthamanipudur, Ondipudur and Singanallur. Light vehicles entering from Neelambur can use the same route.
• Buses and heavy vehicles leaving via Avinashi Road should make a U-turn at Lakshmi Mills Junction and travel via Puliyakulam, Ramanathapuram and Singanallur to Neelambur Bypass. Light vehicles can use Masakkalipalayam Road to Singanallur. Vehicles from Hope College should turn at Tidel Park Junction and use Kamarajar Road to reach Singanallur.
• Heavy vehicles travelling from Kalapatti Junction towards Sitra and Avinashi Road can use Thennampalayam. Those from Goldwins towards Avinashi Road should turn right at Maruthi Bakery Junction on Housing Unit Road and take Vilankurichi Road towards Kalapatti Junction.
• Airport passengers should arrive 30 minutes before departure. Taxis and other vehicles cannot park inside the airport on September 30.
• Heavy vehicles are completely barred from entering the city from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) submitted a Detailed Project Report for an ₹824-crore underground drainage project in Kalapatti, Vilankurichi and parts of Saravanampatti to the Directorate of Municipal Administration for approval. The project covers newly added corporation areas; CCMC is preparing cost estimates and seeking funds through the Central Finance Commission’s SIC component.

The proposed zone’s population is projected at 130,264 in 2030, 172,132 in 2045 and 224,999 in 2060. Daily sewage generation is estimated at 13.37 MLD, 17.66 MLD and 23.09 MLD for those years, respectively. The network will include 411 km of pipelines, 10 pumping stations, five lifting stations, 15,777 manholes and 33,637 household connections. Sewage is to be treated at a proposed 17.66-MLD plant at Ondipudur, with treated wastewater discharged into the Noyyal River. The project is expected to benefit wards 4–10 and 21–23.

Tamil Nadu’s State Highways Department (NH wing) is awaiting Central government approval for ₹240 crore to repair damaged sections of NH 181, formerly NH 67, in Coimbatore district. The proposed work covers about 40 km from Ondipudur flyover in Coimbatore city to Burliyar and includes patch repairs and a bridge across the Bhavani. The project has been pending for almost two years.

11. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, said the department should take up specific works at identified locations, including black spots, rather than club widening, patchwork, repairs and bridge construction. He said Mettupalayam needs land acquisition to widen the road to four lanes, and improvements without widening there would not benefit the public.

Administrative sanction revised to Rs 185 crore November 8, 2023. Technical sanction issued August 18, 2023; tenders floated October 13, 2023. Massive pipeline installation required extensive excavation along Trichy Road (NH 181), damaging road surface. Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran confirmed all major works completed except one chamber on Trichy Road. CCMC will restore road to highway standards after chamber work completion. Project includes 17 integration points linking with old connections.
