BMC Demolishes Evershine Nagar Bridge Ramp, Sparking Malvani Protests

The BMC removed a ramp used by two-wheelers on the Evershine Nagar pedestrian bridge, prompting a Malvani residents’ PIL and hunger strike over longer, less safe journeys.

The BMC demolished the ramp to the approximately 12-foot-wide Evershine Nagar bridge over Marve Creek overnight on January 31-February 1. Intended for pedestrians, it had been used by two-wheelers for over a decade as a shortcut between Malvani and Evershine Nagar, avoiding the congested Malad-Marve Road. The second arm of the Mith Chowky flyover opened on January 11; the Goregaon RTO and Evershine Nagar residents wanted bikes barred from the bridge.

Malvani resident Jamil Merchant filed a PIL in the Bombay High Court on February 6, saying 25,000–30,000 people use the bridge and the detour adds at least 1 km; the flyover runs only one-way towards Malad. Ten people began an indefinite hunger strike demanding the ramp be rebuilt and bikes allowed. Women pedestrians, including domestic workers, raised safety concerns about the dark, deserted 1-km route alongside mangroves and unreliable lighting.

Evershine Nagar, comprising 325 buildings, had sought demolition. Residents’ association president Tajinder Singh Tiwana said 30,000–40,000 bikes caused nuisance and hit-and-run accidents, and called the ramp illegal. P North assistant commissioner Kundan Valvi said the bridge is for pedestrians, cited the flyover as an alternative and said he would look into lighting.
