Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya submitted a preliminary feasibility proposal for a West Bengal Regional Rapid Transit System (WB-RRTS) to Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, seeking connections between Kolkata and South Bengal centres. Published on 26 September 2026, the proposal follows the broad model of NCRTC’s Namo Bharat corridors and envisages four routes radiating from a central hub at Maidan, Kolkata.

The proposed network would connect Kolkata with Kalyani, Krishnanagar, Mayapur, Durgapur, Asansol, Diamond Harbour, Haldia, Kharagpur and Medinipur. The proposal also identifies Burdwan among the region’s growing industrial, educational, commercial, port and tourism centres. It argues that current connections rely heavily on conventional rail and highways, which can face congestion and are not designed for high-frequency commuter travel.

The proposal recommends establishing a West Bengal Rapid Transit Corporation (WBRTC) as a special-purpose vehicle, with participation from the Union and West Bengal governments. Its aims include faster passenger links, support for commuting and industrial activity, and multimodal integration.
