The Defence Estate Office cleared nearly 1.2 acres of defence land in Lullanagar after contractors occupied it with unauthorised structures for nearly 15 years.

The Defence Estate Office, Southern Command, cleared nearly 1.2 acres of A-2 category defence land in Lullanagar on Tuesday, demolishing hundreds of unauthorised tin sheds and iron structures with JCB machines. Private contractors engaged by the Military Engineering Service had occupied the land for nearly 15 years, despite repeated notices to vacate. The site is worth crores of rupees and is about 500 metres from the principal director of defence estates’ office and near the Southern Command Hospital.

Defence Estates Officer Pune Vikas Kumar said earlier attempts to reclaim the land had failed. Some occupants approached courts, but the proceedings did not change the finding that the occupation was illegal. The DEO plans to fence the land and recover occupation charges.

Cantonment-based activist Raja Bhau Chavan called for a thorough probe into how the occupation continued since 2011, a police investigation and an independent inquiry board. The DEO Pune circle oversees nearly 72,000 acres of defence land across several districts and cantonments in Maharashtra.

Pune Bans Heavy Vehicles Around Gangadham Chowk During Daytime

Pune police announced a 6 am–11 pm heavy-vehicle ban around Gangadham Chowk after a fatal crash, with height barriers planned to enforce restrictions.

Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar announced a temporary ban on trucks, dumpers, cement mixers and other multi-axle commercial vehicles from 6 am to 11 pm on three stretches: Gangadham Chowk–Aai Mata Mandir (Shatrunjay Temple Road), Lullanagar–Gangadham Chowk–Bibwewadi Road, and Seven Loves Chowk–Gangadham Chowk. A formal notification is expected, and height barriers will be installed with Pune Municipal Corporation assistance.

The move follows a Wednesday fatal crash in which a truck illegally entered a restricted zone and killed a 29-year-old woman riding pillion on a two-wheeler. Three fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles have occurred at the chowk in the past year. Since June 2023, heavy vehicles had been prohibited on two feeder roads from 7 am to 10 pm. Police cited continuing violations linked to construction and commercial activity, and said ready-mix cement trucks would also be barred. Police will inspect shops, vegetable vendors and godowns near Market Yard and seal those operating without required approvals and licences. Kumar visited Thursday evening with joint commissioner Ranjan Kumar Sharma and additional commissioner Manoj Patil.
