Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's new 3.9 km road from Kasarvadavli to Kharbao will destroy 6.7 acres of mangroves with compensation plantings in distant Gadchiroli.

MMRDA is developing a 3.9 km, 40-metre-wide road with eight lanes (four each direction) from Ghodbunder Road (Kasarvadavli) to Major State Highway 4 (Chinchat Anjur Phata Road), crossing Balkum, Gaimukh, Delhi-Mumbai freight corridor and Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor with a 100-metre basket bridge over Ulhas Creek. The project will destroy 6.7 acres of mangroves in Thane. Road aims to provide direct connectivity to Bhiwandi and decongest Thane city by providing alternative to existing Old Agra Road via Majiwada and Mumbai-Nashik highway via Kalwa. Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority cleared the project. Compensatory afforestation of 37 hectares required in Wedse tehsil of Gadchiroli district in Vidarbha, not in coastal Maharashtra. Environmentalist D Stalin of Vanashakti NGO criticised the project, arguing mangrove loss is permanent and road could be built on stilts to minimise wetland damage.
