BBMP to begin ₹500 crore rural development projects in Mittaganahalli

Bengaluru civic authorities will issue tenders for ₹500 crore in development projects in Mittaganahalli and Kannur villages following protests over waste dumping.

Key facts

Following protests by residents of Mittaganahalli and Kannur villages over dumping city waste in the Mittaganahalli quarry pit, BBMP Chief Civic Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath announced tenders and work orders will soon begin for rural development projects worth ₹500 crore in these areas. Funds were allocated in the last budget but works are yet to be taken up.

The Mittaganahalli landfill faces severe environmental challenges: 275 crore litres of leachate (contaminated liquid from decomposing waste) have accumulated over time. A tender for leachate treatment aims to resolve the issue over 3-4 years.

Current treatment capacity: two operational plants with 100 KLD and 25 KLD capacity. Plans underway to establish a 2,000 KLD plant at an estimated cost of ₹474 crore.

Giri Nath stated protests stemmed from conflicts between residents and contractors over improper disposal practices, now mostly resolved. Waste disposal operations have resumed; currently at night with measures being taken for daytime disposal as well. District panchayat CEO will visit affected areas to address concerns and streamline the disposal process.
