Unauthorized construction continues on Kanathur beach despite stop-work order

Construction work using heavy machinery continues at an unauthorized site in Kanathur's coastal no-development zone despite a stop-work order from Tamil Nadu authorities.

Construction with heavy machinery continues at an unauthorised site on Kanathur Reddikuppam beach along East Coast Road, despite a stop-work order and show cause notice from the State Coastal Zone Management Authority (TNSCZMA).

Videos show earthmovers levelling the beach and workers raising a compound wall 10-15m from the sea. Fishing nets on the beach are being encroached. Work continues from 6am to 7pm, hidden behind metal sheets.

The site is in the No-Development Zone (NDZ) of CRZ-III in Kanathur Reddikuppam village, Chengalpattu district. An assistant executive engineer's report concluded the property lies within NDZ where new constructions are strictly prohibited under CRZ notification. Only repairs and reconstruction of existing authorised structures are allowed—neither applies here.

Property owners: Sherif Salman and Mugamud Riswan Sherif, Venkateshwara Garden, ECR, Kanathur.

Stop-work order issued June 23. Show cause notice requires owners to explain within 15 days why legal proceedings should not begin under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

Local fishermen report livelihood at stake and say government officials have done little beyond issuing notices.
