IIT Madras Runoff Floods Roads in Taramani and Kanagam

Rainwater released through the IIT Madras compound wall has flooded roads, with Taramani and Kanagam facing prolonged stagnation and a drain proposed on Thiruvalluvar Salai.

Key facts

Rainwater from the IIT Madras campus flows through its compound wall along Gandhi Main Road at Velachery, Kanagam, Pallipattu and Taramani, flooding several roads. Low-lying Taramani is worst affected; narrow streets in Taramani and Kanagam can remain waterlogged for days. The Greater Chennai Corporation should advise IIT Madras to build a drain, residents said. A Corporation official said the stormwater drain on Velachery Main Road handles runoff from the IIT gate there, and a drain is proposed on Thiruvalluvar Salai.

Separately, the Highways Department is building a macro drain along Chennai-Thiruvallur High Road at Avadi and Pattabhiram. Precast concrete blocks and roadside barricades have narrowed the road and caused peak-hour traffic to halt; the department and Avadi Traffic Police were asked to remove the blocks.
